Many people don't even know that in addition to the large city of Voronezh, the regional center, there is a river of the same name in Russia. It is a left tributary of the well-known Don and is a very calm winding reservoir, surrounded throughout its length by wooded, picturesque banks. Voronezh is a river 1403 kilometers long, the left bank of which is gentle, with an abundance of small lakes and oxbow lakes, and the right bank is steep and high.
A brief description of the Voronezh River
The Voronezh River flows through the territory of the Lipetsk, Tambov and Voronezh regions. Formed at the confluence of Lesny Voronezh and Polny Voronezh. It is a typical flat river. It starts at the village of Pushkino (Ryazan region, Ukholovsky district). The confluence of two rivers occurs near the village of Novonikolskoye (Tambov region, Michurinsky district). After that, for 60 km the river flows to the northwest. There, the Stanovaya Ryasa flows into it. Five kilometers from the place of confluence, the river turns sharply from north to south, while deviating slightly to the southwest. If we look at the map, we will see thatThe Voronezh River is a reservoir on which three cities are located - Voronezh, Lipetsk and Michurinsk. You can also see that there are many different villages along the banks. And, for example, below the village of Stupino, the Voronezh Reserve adjoins the left bank. It will be very interesting for tourists with children and novice travelers. There are several hiking trails along the river. Let's travel a bit.
Let's start the journey from Michurinsk
Many people have heard about this city. From these places the Voronezh River begins. The map confirms this. Michurinsk is an all-Union center of scientific fruit growing. The city was founded as a fortress to protect against nomadic peoples in 1636. The city has: the house-museum of I. V. Michurin, the local history museum, the drama theater, the Elias Church - an architectural monument built according to the project of V. V. Rastrelli, a famous architect.
Michurinsk is located on the steep bank of Lesnoy Voronezh, from where we will begin our short journey. Through several fairly large loops, the river connects with Polny Voronezh. From this confluence, the river itself flows, which is the topic of this article. Its current is calm, its width is 20-30 meters.
A little further, having received a large tributary - the Stanovoy Ryasu, it becomes noticeably more full-flowing. On the right bank, high, there are mainly small settlements, on the left - forests. Soon we will see a destroyed dam in front of the village of Good. Depending on the experience of travelers and the water level, the dam can be walked alongchannel along the left bank or spillway.
Followed by water meadows, then floodplain forests. Behind Goritsy there is a school tourist camp, next to which you can equip your own for recreation. Soon, motor boats will begin to meet, which are a clear sign of approaching Lipetsk.
We are in Lipetsk
This city arose in the XIII century, but its development began at the end of the XVII century, when Peter I made the Azov campaigns. Even by his decree, ironworks were erected in Lipetsk, which provided the fleet being built in Voronezh with the necessary metal. A little later, the city began to develop as a mud and balneological resort. At this point in time, Lipetsk is a major cultural and industrial center of Russia. There are: a local history museum, a drama theater, the house of Peter I, a local history museum and other architectural monuments of the 17th-18th centuries. We get to the middle part of the city and see that the river has overflowed widely in this place, and the result is a reservoir 700 meters wide and two kilometers long. Below Lipetsk, we see that villages stretch almost continuously along the right bank, and deciduous and pine forests along the left.
Between Lipetsk and the village of Ramon
In the floodplain there are swamps, many old women, lakes. The Voronezh River (this is clearly visible on the map of the area) crosses many interesting and beautiful places along its entire length. After the village of Troitskoye, it is divided into channels, here the current is weak, but it drags on, so you need tofollow the route carefully so as not to end up in a dead channel. In this area, the forest recedes from the water and reappears near the villages of Karamyshevo and Pada.
On the left bank, from the village of Verbilovo, the Kulikovskoe hunting estate is spread over a large territory. If you wish, you can get permission from the management of the farm and inspect the dams and beaver settlements. At the village of Manino, the river again divides into channels. Soon we will reach the mouth of the Izlegoshcha River - a very picturesque place where it is quite possible to get a rest. Even lower is the village of Karachun, which is located on the right bank. These places are famous for their pottery.
From Karachun, 15 kilometers away is one of the oldest settlements in these parts - Ramon. Here in the 16th century, under Tsar Peter I, there was a shipyard. The palace, which was the summer residence of the Princess of Oldenburg, is also well preserved. It was built in the Old English style; a monument to the local native S. I. Mosin, the inventor of the well-known Russian three-ruler. The Voronezh River is unusual and unforgettable - photos taken on its banks only confirm this.
From Ramon to the end of the journey - the city of Voronezh
A small railway branch departs from Ramon along the left bank. On it you can get to the Office of the Voronezh Reserve. This is Grafskaya station. If you get permission to visit it, you will have a lot of fun visiting the beaver farm, aviaries, beaver settlements and the museum.
Further up to the regional center, the entire right bank hasvery picturesque view thanks to the beautiful deciduous forests. Having passed under the Chertovitsky highway bridge, the Voronezh River turns into a reservoir, which stretches almost to the Don - 40 km. Here, in bad weather, there is already a high wave, and swimming becomes very dangerous for tourists without the appropriate experience.
Our hike ends in the city of Voronezh, which was founded in 1585 as a fortress. There are many architectural monuments here. Some of them are the Potemkin Palace, built in 1760, and the Nikolskaya Church, built even earlier - in 1720. There are also four theaters, museums of fine arts and local history.
The Voronezh River is a tributary of the Don
The map of Russian rivers clearly shows us that the Voronezh River is one of the many tributaries of the largest reservoir in the European part of Russia - the Don. Yes, in Europe it is second only to the Danube, Dnieper and Volga in terms of catchment area. Its catchment area is 422 thousand km2, and its length is 1870 km. It starts at an altitude of 180 meters above sea level, in the northern part of the Central Russian Upland. Previously, the source of this great river was considered the place of exit from the famous Lake Ivan, but this is not so. Now, such a place is often called the Shatskoye reservoir, located north of Novomoskovsk, a city in the Tula region. This is also not true, the reservoir is even fenced off by a railway dam from the river.
A little about Don
The real source of the Don is located at a distance of 2-3 kilometers to the east, in the park. The “Source of the Don” is even installed here - an architectural complex, although the source itself in this complex is powered by a water supply network, that is, of artificial origin. Navigation on the river operates from the mouth to Voronezh, the distance is 1590 km.
There is a place where the Don is very close to another major river - the Volga. A map of the rivers of Russia defines this place as a district of the city of Kalach. The distance between them is only 80 km. Here, both rivers were connected in 1952 by the navigable Volga-Don Canal.
A little more information. A dam was built near the village of Tsimlyanskaya, which raises the water level by 27 meters. Its length is 12.8 km. Thus, the Tsimlyansk reservoir was formed. It has a capacity of 21.5 km3, a usable capacity of 12.6 km3, an area of 2600 km3, stretches from Golubinskaya to Volgodonsk. Of course, the dam provides benefits - it houses a hydroelectric power station. Water from this reservoir is used for watering and irrigating the Salsky steppes and other steppe territories of the Volgograd and Rostov regions.
Tributes of the Don River
As already noted, the Don stretches for almost 2000 km. Throughout its length, it is fed by many tributaries, both large and small. There are three largest ones:
- Ursa, on the left side, 767 km - length, 34700 km² - basin area.
- Khoper - on the left side, 1008 km - length, 61100 km² - basin area.
- Seversky Donetsk, on the right side, 1016 km - length, 99600 km² - basin area.
There are so many small tributaries that just listing them would take a whole page. Their length is fromtwo kilometers to 1862. Some don't even have names.

It is clear that such a beautiful vast area could not be used for recreation of local residents, tourists and travelers. Why are these places so attractive? For example, Voronezh (river) is characterized by:
