In 1789, an English flotilla led by Lord Nelson stopped in the bay of Marmaris. Nothing much happened in the city for the next century and a half.

Modern history

In 1957, Marmaris was badly damaged by an earthquake. Oddly enough, this tragic event gave impetus to the development of the city.
