The history of Ukrainian civil aviation is inextricably linked with the Kharkiv airport, located in the city of the same name. History

As already mentioned, the airport in the city of Kharkov began its work in 1923. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, additional concrete runways were built here. The airfield itself was actively used by Soviet military aircraft. However, during the hostilities, the territory of the air harbor was subjected to massive bombing more than once, as a result of which both the take-off field and all buildings were almost completely destroyed.

Building a newairport began in 1951 on a standard project. Interestingly, according to the same project, air harbors were built in other cities - Lvov and Yekaterinburg. The newly built Kharkov air harbor began its work in 1954.

Since 2008, the entire airport complex (with the exception of the runway, which is a strategic government facility) has been leased from New Systems AM. With the help of Austrian and German specialists, a project was developed for a large-scale reconstruction of the air harbor, the implementation of which immediately began. As a result, in August 2010, a new passenger terminal was opened, the throughput of which is 650 people per hour. The old airport building was also reconstructed, which was converted into a terminal serving VIP passengers. In 2011, a new runway was put into operation, the length of which was 2,500 meters. Thanks to it, the Kharkiv airport got the opportunity to receive large airliners designed for non-stop flights over medium distances. In August 2013, the air harbor set a kind of record by landing the AN-124 Ruslan on its airfield, which has the largest takeoff weight among all aircraft that have ever landed in Kharkiv.

Kharkiv Airport: how to get there

The air harbor is located within the city, just13 kilometers from its center (in a southwesterly direction). You can get from the airport to the center of Kharkov by bus, trolleybus or fixed-route taxi. You can also use the services of your own airport taxi service. You can order a car immediately after landing at the ticket office number 20, located in terminal A. A taxi ride, depending on the address you need, will cost 50-120 hryvnia (or 200-500 rubles).

Kharkiv Airport, in addition to two runways, one of which is capable of receiving even large aircraft, has three terminals on its territory. The main one consists of two parts and receives and sends passengers both to domestic and international destinations. In the old building of the airport, which has undergone reconstruction, today there is a VIP terminal. Also on the territory of the air harbor there is a reverse terminal and a hangar designed for private jets.

Infrastructure

Kharkiv airport offers a wide range of services to passengers waiting for their aircraft to depart. There are bank branches, ATMs and currency exchange points where you can make the necessary payments, as well as withdraw or exchange money for foreign currency. If you are traveling with a small child (up to seven years old), you can use the mother and child room. If you need to leave your luggage for some time, you can do this in the airport luggage room,located in the left wing of terminal A and operating around the clock. There is also a medical center on the territory of the air harbor, where you can go in case of illness.

To pass the time before departure, you can have a bite to eat in one of the several cafeterias or buy something in the duty-free shop. Passengers are also provided with wireless Internet access on the territory of the airport. If you would like to book a room at a nearby hotel, rent a car or book a city tour, all this can be done at the respective offices located in the main terminal.

Passengers who rely on VIP service can be provided with the corresponding service. So, they have a comfortable VIP room, personal transport and a whole range of other services.
