From Moscow, even on a regular weekend, it is really possible to organize some kind of outing to the ancient cities of the Golden Ring. One of these is Kostroma, which is the northernmost regional center on the Volga, and just a beautiful city that contrasts with big and noisy Moscow. It is useful to know how to get the route from Moscow to Kostroma by car and other modes of transport.
Drive a car
For people traveling by car, the distance from Moscow to Kostroma will be about 345 kilometers. It is necessary to drive along two routes: E-115 and R-600. The first is of fairly good quality, it leads to Yaroslavl. Before reaching the Volga, in the south of Yaroslavl, you need to turn to the northeast.
The distance by car from Moscow to Kostroma can be reached in about six hours.
The road between Yaroslavl and Kostroma is not very interesting, mostly villages along the way, but from Moscow to Yaroslavl, on the contrary, an interesting section, so if you have free time, you should see interesting cities along the way:
- Rostov the Great.
- Pereslavl-Zalessky.
- SergievPosad.
- Pushkino.
Route through Ivanovo
The distance by car from Moscow to Kostroma can be more than 345 kilometers if you go through the regional center of Ivanovo. Near Rostov the Great, you can turn onto the R-152 highway and drive along it through Teikovo to Ivanovo from the western side. The R-600 highway leads from Ivanovo to Kostroma through the cities of Privolzhsk and Furmanov.
If you have enough time, you should pay attention to Ivanovo. Quite an interesting city in terms of architecture. There are many buildings of the 1920s and 1930s in the style of constructivism. There are enough museums, from 10 am to 6 pm each of them can be visited.
By train and bus
By car, the distance from Moscow to Kostroma can be overcome in six hours. On the train, it's the same. From the Yaroslavl station, they depart according to the following schedule:
- 00:35. This train goes to Vladivostok.
- 17:08. Evening trailer car.
- 23:20. Separate train to Kostroma.
The cost of tickets depends on the type of carriage, and there are only four of them:

In general, this is a very convenient schedule, you can leave on Friday closer than midnight, arrive in Kostroma on Saturday early in the morning, spend a couple of days in the city and leave back at 23:40 by the local Kostroma train, which arrives in the capital by 6 am.
Ride ona bus from Moscow to Kostroma will cost about 1000 rubles, that is, more expensive than the cheapest train tickets. It takes about 6.5 hours to drive, there are many flights, they run from 7 am to 2 am. They depart from Sheremetyevo Airport and from the VDNH bus station.
