Legend of the founding of the cathedral
The story of how the Cherepovets Monastery was founded is known to every local. According to legend, the foundation of the monastery happened in the following way. One Sunday afternoon, a we althy Moscow merchant was sailing along the Sheksna to Beloozero. Suddenly, everything around became dark and the boat with the goods ran aground. Struck by what had happened, the merchant began to pray frantically and ask for help. Suddenly, a miracle happened before his eyes - a nearby mountain began to burn, and rays of light emanated from behind it, as if showing him the way. As soon as the boat was able to refloat, the fire on the mountain disappeared.
Shocked by his unexpected escape, the merchant climbed the mountain and was amazed at the view before him. Two rivers with silver ribbons crossed the lowlands, abundantly overgrown with forest. The rescued merchant marked this place by erecting a wooden cross, so that a year later he would return to the mountain and erect a small chapel here.
History of the Resurrection Cathedral
According to experts who have studied the legend of the founding of the monastery, the merchant who built the first chapel on the mountain and the founder of the monastery Theodosius are one and the same person. It is believed that after the construction of the chapel, two monks Athanasius and Theodosius came here and founded a monastery on the mountain. Initially, the complex of the Resurrection Monastery included two churches -Resurrection of Christ and the Holy Trinity.
The first documentary mention of the Cherepovets Monastery dates back to 1449. However, it is known that the second abbot of the monastery, St. Athanasius, died in 1392, therefore, the history of the temple begins in the fourteenth century. The exact date of construction of the cathedrals is unknown.
The stone church at the temple was built only in 1752. The original appearance of this temple is quite different from the modern one. The first reconstruction was carried out already a hundred years after the end of construction, as it was necessary to completely replace the old roof. At the same time, the temple is completely painted by local talented artists.

Of course, after the revolution, the temple could not avoid the sad fate of almost all cathedrals of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1923, the Cathedral was seized, and ten years later it was finally closed. For two decades, the monastery almost completely ceased to exist. Of the entire complex, only one Resurrection Cathedral (Cherepovets) has survived to this day, which was restored in the nineties of the last century. All other historical heritage was completely lost.
