Located next to the square, the Astakhovsky bridge is the oldest bridge in the capital of Russia. It has only been rebuiltin 1940, the mouth of the Yauza River was called the Shelter in former times. This was due to the fact that merchants stopped to rest in this place, who floated their goods along the rivers.
After some time, Yauza lost the status of a navigable reservoir. The area is still very popular. Near the Yauzsky bridge there was a road junction in different directions: to Kolomna, Vladimir and Ryazan. In 1917, the flag-bearer Illarion Astakhov was killed by a police officer at the point of contact between the roads. As a result, the bridge was renamed in his honor during the Soviet era.
Next to the Yauza Gate Square there were popular Silver baths. Not far from them was a small house in which Ostrovsky lived. At the beginning of Yauzsky Boulevard there was a building that was chosen by tea merchants, and the temple of the Yauzsky Gates, built back in 1629
