What is remarkable about the Yauza Gate Square?

Located next to the square, the Astakhovsky bridge is the oldest bridge in the capital of Russia. It has only been rebuiltin 1940, the mouth of the Yauza River was called the Shelter in former times. This was due to the fact that merchants stopped to rest in this place, who floated their goods along the rivers.

After some time, Yauza lost the status of a navigable reservoir. The area is still very popular. Near the Yauzsky bridge there was a road junction in different directions: to Kolomna, Vladimir and Ryazan. In 1917, the flag-bearer Illarion Astakhov was killed by a police officer at the point of contact between the roads. As a result, the bridge was renamed in his honor during the Soviet era.

Next to the Yauza Gate Square there were popular Silver baths. Not far from them was a small house in which Ostrovsky lived. At the beginning of Yauzsky Boulevard there was a building that was chosen by tea merchants, and the temple of the Yauzsky Gates, built back in 1629

Cathedral of Peter and Paul

The Church of Peter and Paul at the Yauza Gates was built in the period from 1700 to 1702. The building was originally brick. The temple consists of a 2-aisle refectory and a three-tier bell tower, which was built in 1771. It has a sacristy and was built in early classicism.

In the 18th-19th centuries. the refectory of the temple was rebuilt. It is possible that the original walls were left intact. The temple did not stop its work, therefore, it retained all the icons and interior decoration. Part of the interiorwas borrowed from the ruined cathedrals that were nearby. Now the temple has become the courtyard of the Orthodox Serbian Church.
