Backstory
Metro "Cherkizovskaya" was opened simultaneously with the station "Ulitsa Podbelskogo", also located on the "red line". There was once a village here, which only in 1917 became part of Moscow. The name of the village Cherkizovo, according to one of the Soviet researchers, comes from the name of a large landowner Ivan Serkizov. His ancestor had enormous we alth, under Dmitry Donskoy he left the Golden Horde and went to Moscow, where he was baptized.
Ivan Serkizov eventually sold the estate that he inherited to Ilya Ozakov, who built the Church of Elijah the Prophet on the territory of the village, which, unfortunately, has not survived to this day. The church in its place was built much later.
It is not known exactly how Serkizovo was transformed into Cherkizovo. These changes are associatedprobably with the phonetic features of the Russian language. In 1917, when Soviet power was established in the country, the village, on the territory of which the Cherkizovskaya metro station was opened 70 years later, entered the city, and in the 60s multi-storey residential buildings began to appear here.
Cherkizovsky Market
For many years, the station referred to in this article was known not only to Muscovites, but also to visitors, thanks to the huge market located nearby. It was located between Sirenevy Boulevard, Schelkovskoye Highway, Izmailovsky Highway and Izmailovsky Proyezd. Among the people Cherkizovsky market had not the best fame. Not only Muscovites, but also journalists often used the disparaging word "Cherkizon" in their notes. It was believed that only consumer goods could be purchased here. Even those who surreptitiously visited Moscow's most famous market said so. It originated in the early nineties. Its closure was preceded by a grand scandal, a terrorist attack and a lawsuit.
Once upon a time there was a research institute building on the site of the Cherkizovsky market. In the early nineties, like many similar institutions, the research institute was closed. In its place was a chaotic, bustling marketplace that quickly became wildly popular. Everything was sold here, frompersonal hygiene products and ending with winter clothing. Moreover, it could be purchased both at retail and wholesale. Connoisseurs of the market, located in the east of the capital, argued that you can buy here the same goods as in elite stores, but several times cheaper.
In August 2006, a terrorist attack took place on the territory of the market. Several dozen people were injured, 14 people died. The perpetrators were found and convicted. Some of the perpetrators received life sentences. But the reason for the closure of the market was still not a terrorist attack, but rather a change in city government.
In 2009, there were reports in the media that the construction of a sports and recreation complex would soon begin on its territory.
