The future monastery gave rise to a small chapel built by two monks - Nikander and Tryphon, who in 1110 came here from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Here the fugitives began to hide from the princely excesses and civil strife, as well as from enemies. At the end of the 12th century, the construction of the Assumption Cathedral made of wood began in these places. But the invasion of the Tatars destroyed it. The names of the town changed regularly - High Town, Town on Staritsa, New Town. And only at the end of the 15th century, Prince Mikhail Yaroslavich, supposedly the nephew of Tsar Alexander Nevsky, ordered to rebuild the city and give it the name Staritsa.

At the top of the hill, when you are just moving along the road to the town from Tver and passing Ivanishi, you can see the ancient majestic Church of the Assumption.
