Penza airport is the only one in the entire region. They call it "Ternovka". It refers to organizations of federal significance. Located nine kilometers from the city center.

Development history

Back in 1936, air transportation began in the Penza region. Three years later, in 1939, the airport for civilian aircraft was opened.

The passenger terminal appeared in 1963. To date, it has already been rebuilt twice. In the late seventies and early eighties, a partial renovation was carried out. Full reconstruction took place in 2003.

The runway with artificial turf for takeoff (landing) of aircraft was built in the early seventies.

The schedule of the Penza airport in the eighties included more than sixty flights a day in the summer. The airport was connected with many cities of the Soviet Union and most of the capitals of the Union republics.

The nineties are connected with the crisis in which the airport found itself. During this period, the number of flights gradually decreased. By autumn 1998year they closed completely. Over the next four years, until 2003, the Penza airport received only transit flights during the warm season.

New stage of development

The second life of "Ternovka" began in autumn 2003 after reconstruction. After that, flights to Moscow were restored on the Yak-40 aircraft three times a week (on Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The following year, flights to the capital departed on weekdays, that is, five times a week. Work during the summer months kept the schedule of previous years.

The number of flights to Moscow doubled in early 2006. In June of the same year, the Saratov-St. Petersburg flight was launched with a stop in Penza.

For several months in 2008, the Yak-42 aircraft operated flights in all directions. They stopped because of the financial crisis. Something similar happened with Rusline flights to Moscow. They were open for less than two months in early 2010. These flights have been suspended due to low demand.

Flights of the Penza airport in the second half of 2010 were operated by Ak Bars Aero.

The winter period of 2010-2011 was a special one for the airfield. During this period, flights to St. Petersburg were not canceled for the winter, they became year-round.

In the summer of 2013, Ternovka Airport again entered the stage of reconstruction. The artificial runway was completely replaced. Its repair began in 2008, when the length of the runway was increased by seven hundred meters. But in operation an elongated bandwas only introduced in September 2013. The total length of the runway became 2.8 kilometers. Immediately after its introduction, the airport accepted the Tu-154 aircraft for the first time in its history.

Penza airport today is able to receive passenger aircraft of all types, except for Boeing-747 and Airbus-A380. Some aircraft have restrictions.

Types of aircraft that the airport is able to receive: An, Il, L-410, models Tu, Yak-40 and Yak-142, Airbus-A319, ATP-42 and ATP-72, Boeing-737, Bombardier 100 /200, SAAB 2000. Lighter models of aircraft can also fly to this airport, as well as all types of helicopters.

Public transport runs between the city center and the airport:

• Buses every ten minutes with routes 30, 54, 66.

Flights at the beginning of this year

The flight schedule of the Penza airport in winter 2017 includes flights to two cities - Moscow and St. Petersburg.

From the beginning of January to the end of March 2017, the following flights are organized from Penza to the capital:

• Morning flights (departure at 9.05) to Domodedovo on weekdays.
• On Saturday, the departure of the flight to Domodedovo at 11.15.
• A flight leaves for Domodedovo Airport at 16.00 on weekdays.
• Daily evening flight to Domodedovo departs at 21.25.

The cost of a flight from Penza to Moscow starts from five thousand rubles and more, depending on the time of the flight, the airline and the chosen class.

From the airport "Ternovka" in Penza to St. Petersburg you can fly the following flights:

• Thursdays at 16.00.
• Sundays at 18.50.

The price of an economy class ticket is eight thousand rubles or more.

During this period, return flights will also be opened, from Moscow (Domodedovo) and St. Petersburg to Penza. The plane will arrive from Moscow on weekdays at 08.15 and 15.10, on Saturdays at 10.25. In addition, there will be a daily flight arriving in Penza at 20.35.

There will be a flight from St. Petersburg to Penza on Thursdays (with arrival at 12.45) and Sundays (with arrival at 18.00).
