This is a long and tiring journey. It is much more convenient and easier to get to the Northern capital from Arkhangelsk by car.

When setting off on a journey by car, you can lay out several routes, then choosing the most convenient and interesting one:
1. Route Arkhangelsk-St. Petersburg by car through Vologda.
From Arkhangelsk you need to go to the federal highway M-8 "Kholmogory" and go along it through Velsk to Vologda, leaving the Northern Dvina River on the left. In Vologda, switch to A-114, along this highway, bypassing the Cherepovets, Tikhvin ring roads, they get to Volkhov. Here you need to use the R-21 highway, which will lead to St. Petersburg from Kirovsk and Shlisselburg.
In this case, you will have to overcome 1400 km, without traffic jams, the travel time will be 17 hours.

2. Route Arkhangelsk-St. Petersburg via Pudozh.
This path is shorter at 1200 km, but it passes through forests, outside of large settlements. There are few gas stations and cafes on this road.
Leaving Arkhangelsk along the federal highway M-8, in the village of Brin-Navolok, turn left onto the highway 11R-001, which runs along the right bank of the Onega River through the cities of Mirny, Plesetsk. In the city of Kargopol, you need to turn off onto the road 11R-002 and drive about 70 km,after which the road will change its marking to 86K-287, but will still go through dense forests and swamps.
In Pudozh, you need to use the A-119 highway and drive along it to the city of Vytegra. Then follow the road 19K-038, which will lead to Oshta.
Then follows the road 41K-001, which will change to E-105. You have to drive along the E-105 for about 210 km, after which, in Lodeynoye Pole, cross over to the R-21. This route will lead to St. Petersburg.
