In second place after Cairo in terms of population is Lagos, which is the largest city in Nigeria. Today, just under eight million people live here. Lagos is a major port and industrial center, in which about 50 percent of all industry in Nigeria is concentrated. The third place in the category "big cities of Africa" is Kinshasa. It is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Leopoldville. In 1966 the city was renamed. As of 2005, the population of Kinshasa was approximately seven and a half million people.
