History of the Square

Initially, this place was the intersection of land tradeways. Therefore, the square was first called Verkhnebazaarnaya or Verkhneposadskaya. Then it became Annunciation when the Cathedral of the Annunciation was built. In the middle of the eighteenth century, another part of this space, next to the descent to the seminary, began to be called Seminarskaya. After the revolution, they were united into one, and since then it has received its current form and name - Soviet Square. The current name was given to her in 1943. It appeared after the installation of a monument to Minin and Pozharsky on the square, which was later moved to Balakhna, the birthplace of Kozma Minin.

The central square of the city is still one of the main transport hubs. A large number of bus routes pass here, the final stop of trolleybuses is located. Nizhny Novgorod, Minin and Pozharsky Square, what area of the city? The answer is Nizhny Novgorod. Varvarskaya, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, Minina and Zelensky congress diverge from it. These directions connect the Nagornaya part of the city with the embankments and further with the Kanavinsky bridge, through which you can get to the Nizhny Novgorod fair and the Moscow railway station. Minin and Pozharsky Square is deservedly considered the heart of Nizhny Novgorod, being its cultural, administrative and social center. Therefore, Nizhny Novgorod residents often call it simply "Center".
