Conceived as a response to the British Heathrow, the terminal is constantly evolving and in recent years has really competed in terms of passenger traffic with the largest airports in the world. Over the 65 years of its existence, the main air gates of the country have changed significantly, especially after a major reconstruction in 2015. Today, Sheremetyevo Airport (international) is an air harbor with the highest level of service, built using modern technologies. It meets the latest safety and maintenance standards.

Milestones in the development of the air port

Initially, it was planned to build a military air base, but by order of Khrushchev, dated the end of July 1959, the airport was redeveloped into a civilian one. Less than two weeks later, on August 11 of the same year, the first plane that took off from what was then Leningrad, the TU-104 aircraft, lands here. By its namethe terminal is obliged to the neighboring village of Sheremetyevsky.

International flights began operating a year later. The first was a flight to the German city of Schönefield, carried out by an Il-18 aircraft (June 1, 1960). The next steps were taken in the autumn of 1967: in October the Muscovites flew to Paris, and in November to New York.

The airport grew, new terminals were completed to serve the ever-increasing flow of passengers. For the XX Olympics, which Russia hosted in the summer of 1980, terminals B and F had already been built, the latter is also known as Sheremetyevo-2. During the month of the competition, almost half a million sports fans from all over the world arrived through this terminal alone.

The form of government changed to an open joint stock company in 1996. Since then, the name Sheremetyevo International Airport has appeared everywhere.

Achievements of the Capital Airport Terminal

It was Sheremetyevo Airport that became the first in Russia to receive the right to receive flights in any weather. This became possible after receiving the ICAO category "3 A" certificate in the summer of 2002. As a first class airfield, it can handle the largest airliners.

For a high level of service, the open JSC "Sheremetyevo International Airport" twice became the winner among other European harbors. The award was based on ASQ (Airport Quality of Service) research in 2012 and 2013.

Plans have already been developed for further modernization of the airport, calculated until 2030 and promising an increase in passenger traffic to 64 million per year. Among other things, it is planned to open a third runway, and there is talk of a fourth one. Also, in the next couple of years, another passenger terminal should be completed.

In addition to the building of terminal F, built for the Olympics in 1980, the rest of the buildings of the southern complex date back to 2008-2010. The project of Terminal D is especially interesting: it is a swan with spread wings. All three terminals serve mainly international flights.

Terminal A was opened in 2012 to service business flights. Most business trips of Muscovites start from here.
