Brussels Airlines is a young Belgian carrier that is both the largest and most experienced aviation company in Europe. History
Brussels Airlines is a company that was created by the merger of two airlines - Virgin Express and SN Brussels Airlines. In 2005, an agreement was signed between the founder of Virgin Express (Richard Branson) and the managing organization SN Brussels Airlines. Under this agreement, SN Brussels Airlines transferred control of Virgin Express. In March 2006, an official announcement was made about the merger of the two airlines. November 7 of the same year, as part of a press conference,held at Brussels Airport, announced the name of the new company.
In January 2007, the purchase of the fourth aircraft, the Airbus A330-300, was announced. Brussels Airlines began operating in March 2007.
In September 2008, Lufthansa acquired a 45% stake in the airline with a further buyout of the remaining 55% within three years. The agreement also provided for the company's entry into Star Alliance, which happened in 2009.
