The Nenets Autonomous Okrug has its own Naryan-Mar airport. This site for the joint deployment of military and civil aircraft belongs to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The airfield belongs to the class "B". Equipped with landing systems of the second and third categories and lighting equipment. The airfield can receive Yak-42 and AN-12 aircraft, as well as lighter ones, and helicopters of any type.
History
The first planes began to arrive at the Naryan-Mar airport in 1933. The construction of the land airfield began in 1940. It was carried out by the people's forces, on Saturdays and Sundays. It was planned that funds for construction would be allocated from the state in the forty-first year, but there were constant delays, which greatly hampered the work. When the war began, it was the construction of the airfield that became a priority.
As a result, the airport began to work actively at the end of the year and was attached to the 772nd aviation base of the Belomorflot. Aircraft fromNaryan-Mar conducted reconnaissance over the Arctic. The length of the runway is 900 meters, it was located at a distance of 1200 meters from the House of Soviets. In the forty-third year, the construction of the airfield was continued.
The work was moving very fast. Drainage ditches were soon laid, the airfield was drained. Wetlands were strewn with sand and had wooden fences. A command post and land shelter for aircraft were built. In 1950, four aviation houses appeared at the airport.
Two years later, a flood occurred, after which the authorities had to additionally build a hotel, an 8-apartment residential building and a transportation department. A shelter was set up to repair aircraft and other equipment. The first plane to land at the airport was the AN-2. In 1955, Naryan-Mar Airport acquired a radar, thanks to which the audibility of aircraft increased up to 60 kilometers. In 1956, the AN-2V squadron was replenished.
A wooden pier was built on the lake at the airport. The modern airfield appeared at the request of the Ministry of Defense only in the late 1960s. At first, the runways were covered with American steel strips, then they were replaced by Soviet PAG-14s.
Since 1981, the Naryan-Mar airport (an arrivals board, respectively, is available) has been used for passenger traffic. In 1981, the terminal was given away, adapted for auxiliary services. In the summer of 1993, a new building opened.
