Monasteries of Meteora

Even modern builders do not have an exact answer to this question. Access to them was quite deliberately made so difficult. During the heyday of the commune, 24 monasteries were built. However, many were destroyed over time and looted. Some of them are not even ruins. The process was aggravated by the appearance of stone steps and roads: the peaks became not so inaccessible. Today, only six of them remain active - four for men and two for women. Despite the fact that this is one of the largest centers of Orthodoxy in Greece, the number of monks living here is very small: in Megala Meteora (once a large monastery), only three people lived in 2016.
