Sheremetyevo International Airport is perhaps the most famous Russian airport. This is not just a large landing area for aircraft, this is a whole city living its own life. Sheremetyevo terminals are a clear indicator of the development of architectural thought over the years. Initially, the civilian airport was conceived as a Soviet response to London's Heathrow Airport, which at one time struck the imagination of N. S. Khrushchev. That is why the architects, designing the airport, brought to life all their creative ideas.
Military roots
Long before the Sheremetyevo passenger terminals appeared, a strategic military airport was built near the village of Chashnikov. Its entire infrastructure was created for military needs. A small military camp, barracks, warehouses with combustible materials, its own concrete factory and an airfield were built on the site. The runway has been significantly reinforced to allow heavy strategic long-range missile carriers to land on it.
However, this was not enough for the normal operation of the airport. Soon, parking spaces for aircraft, command and control rooms, roofed hangars, radar stations, visual runway indication systems and a central control center were erected on its territory. Already in 1957, the new airport received about 20 long-range strategic bombers. Active operation of the facility has begun.
The airport's civic history began after N. S. Khrushchev visited the British capital. The huge civilian Heathrow airport was the first thing the Soviet leader saw in the UK. N. S. Khrushchev was amazed at this and ordered the construction of an airport that could be compared with English. Its first terminals appeared in 1959. The airport was officially named Sheremetyevo.
The new civilian airport has inherited the entire military infrastructure. The USSR Armed Forces no longer had anything to do with him.
The first full-fledged terminal was the Sheremetyevo-1 complex. This building was built according to a project corresponding to the architectural spirit of those times. For its unusual design, this complex was popularly nicknamed "glass".
The structure of a modern airport
Today, the airport has grown significantly in size. The new Sheremetyevo terminals provide impressive throughput. There are terminals on the territory of the airport:
- A;
- B;
- С;
- D;
- E;
- F.
Initially, all these air terminal complexes were separate structures, but in 2010 the complexes were restructured and rationalized. The result of the measures taken was the merging of terminals D, E, F into one large complex, which was called the South Air Terminal Complex. All terminals were connected by spacious walkways.
Terminal E
There are many ways to get to the object, one of them is the Aeroexpress train to Sheremetyevo. Terminal E has its own stop and is located between the other two terminals - D and F. It is quite new, as it was put into operation in 2010.
This is a modern and high-tech three-storey railway station complex with a colossal capacity, essential for the entire Sheremetyevo International Airport. Terminal E accepts aircraft from international and domestic destinations. The transition to terminals D and F is carried out directly without leaving the airport complex. A free internal bus is available to ensure accessibility to all complexes.
Inconvenient terminal
Any major airport is famous for the fact that some terminals are placed very inconveniently. It happens that passengers who arrive at the airport 5 hours before departure end up late for the flight because they could not find their terminal.
Territory of airport terminalscomplexes is huge. It is not surprising that passengers have a search query “How to get to Sheremetyevo. Terminal C is one of the most popular. Indeed, the terminal is located inconveniently. Often people do not even realize that they have already reached the airport, but simply could not find the right terminal.
The easiest way to get there is to use the free shuttle bus that runs between the terminals. We must not forget that the journey can take as much as 30 minutes. It is always worth leaving early.
The road by car is not difficult, but not everyone has it. If you drive along the Leningradskoye highway and turn onto Sheremetyevskoye, you will immediately meet the designation of Sheremetyevo Airport. Terminal C is located near this turn and is part of the Sheremetyevo-1 complex.
Terminal for we althy passengers
In order to ensure comfort for we althy passengers, Terminal A was built. This is a purely specialized air terminal complex designed for business aviation, as well as representatives of public authorities.
