Munich Airport… It is unlikely that among the avid tourists there are many who have never heard of this amazing and truly convenient place for travel. And some have even already managed to use its services, traveling around Europe or transferring for further flights to South or North America.
Section 1. Munich Airport. General information
This world-famous international air gate is located 30 km from the city and is a modern complex with well-developed infrastructure and high-tech equipment.
It should be noted that this is the second largest airport in Germany. In general, the airline carries out cargo and passenger transportation and receives flights from 250 cities around the world. It also has direct connections with some Russian cities.
Two runways with a length of 4 km allow you to receive aircraft of any type. However, there is a ban on the reception of so-called "noisy aircraft".
Surprisingly, the annual passenger traffic is actually quite impressive and amounts to almost 10 million people. The base airline of the airport is the national airline Lufthansa.
Section 2. Airport infrastructure
Munich Airport includes many services that provide food, rest and leisure for visitors. These include various shops, cafes, banks, a pharmacy, Internet services, rest rooms, etc.
Comfortable hotels and hotels are located next to the building. Convenient location allows passengers to easily get here at any time of the day. From the railway station you can get to the city and to other parts of Germany. Special buses "Munich: railway station - airport" run along the A9 highway.
Section 3. Baggage check-in
If necessary, anyone can deposit their bags and suitcases upon arrival at the airport.
You don’t even need to carry anything on your own, because carts are used to transport things, which are enough here. The building has 24-hour automatic luggage storage and baggage drop-off points. Such services in an automatic locker have the following approximate prices (the price is indicated per day):
- hand luggage weighing up to 5 kg - 3.5 euros;
- baggage up to 20 kg - 4.5 euros;
- load up to 30 kg - about 8 euros.
At baggage collection points, the checkout time starts at 12 midnight. For example, if you leave things from 21.00 pm to 9.00 am, then payment will be chargedfor two days (from 21.00 to 0.00 and from 0.00 to 9.00).
Section 4. Shopping at the airport
In general, all travelers are interested in two global questions: "How to get to Munich Airport?" and “What to take with you on the road?” We managed to close the first one, now let's deal with the second one.
I would like to note right away that it is not recommended to take huge trunks with souvenirs and food with you. Why? The fact is that in the airport shops you can buy anything, and at fairly low prices.
True, tourists mostly buy food. Especially if the arrival in Munich fell on a Saturday evening. On Sundays, grocery stores in the city are closed and you can't buy anything. Many recommend the Edeka store, located on the 3rd level in the central part of the airport opposite the rental counters. The outlet is open from 5.30 am to 0.00 am.
All outlets are easy to find. In principle, it is difficult to find a place more understandable than Munich Airport. The scheme of the structure, however, is placed on special stands and is found, as they say, on every corner.
Section 5. Where can I eat?
If you get hungry while waiting for a flight, you can stop by and try the local cuisine at Surf restaurant, located opposite the SIXT counters.
But that's not all. On the territory of the Munich Airport on the 3rd level between the 1st and 2nd terminals there is a brewery, where you can also have a bite to eat and taste delicious fresh beer.
Many say that the architects did their best when designing Munich Airport. The arrivals board, for example, is visible from almost every part of the building.
Section 6. Where to stay cheap for the night?
Usually this question arises if the arrival or departure of the aircraft is expected at night. In this case, many simply stay overnight in the airport building and spend the night on benches in the waiting room. Agree, not very convenient.
Others prefer to rent hotel rooms. On the territory of the Munich air terminal there are two hotels - Kempimski and Novotel. According to some reviews, the Kempinski hotel has rather high prices. The most budget is Novotel.
Within a radius of 5 km from the airport there are other hotels that offer rooms at reasonable rates. You can familiarize yourself with the list of hotels where you can spend the night in advance on the official website. Munich Airport updates information regularly.
Section 7. Airport hotels
Novotel is a low cost hotel, great for business travellers. Prices largely depend on the type of apartment. The rooms have a modern design and are equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay of visitors. It has eight conference rooms equipped with air conditioning, Internet and special equipment. The convenient location allows easy access to the terminals, the city of Freising, the center of Munich or the exhibition center.
Another airport hotel Kempinski Hotel Airport Munchen also hascomfortable rooms, bars, swimming pool, restaurant, SPA-salons and laundry services. There is a car park next to it. Secretarial and wake-up call services are available as needed. Each room is equipped with a minibar and a private bathroom with all toiletries.
The hotel is located near the center of the city of Oberding, which allows tourists to get to many places of culture and recreation on foot. You can also book a seat at the administration on the bus following the route "Munich: airport - city center". The ticket is purchased right there. Prices are the same as in a regular checkout, without any fees and commissions.
Section 8. How to get to the city?
Electric trains are the most convenient means of transportation from Munich Airport to the city. S-Bahn lines S1 transit through Neufahrn, Moosach, Lime, Marienplatz to Ostbahnhof and back.
Another line S8 runs in the direction of the Main Station, but through the East Station. Tickets (The Airport-City Day Ticket) are purchased at the airport terminal in special machines.
This ticket allows you to use all types of public transport until 6 am the next day. Its cost is 11, 20 euros. For 20, 40 euros you can buy a group ticket (up to 5 people). Price indexing takes place depending on the level of inflation. Long-distance and regional trains, as well as metro lines (U-bahn) depart from the Main and East Stations. Way to Mainstation takes 45 minutes, and to Vostochny - 53 minutes. Trains run from 4 am to 1 am.
An alternative to the train is the city bus Lufthansa Airport Bus, connecting Munich Airport with its suburbs (the cities of Freising, Erding, etc.). The bus stop is located at the Nordfriedhof underground station and Munich Central Station. You can order tickets online, the cost is 9.50 euros. The Main Station can be reached in 45 minutes.
You can get into the city by taxi, the parking lots of which are located near terminals No. 1, No. 2 and in the northern part of the Central zone of level E03. Orders are accepted by phone or at counters at the airport. The journey to the center of Munich will take approximately 40 minutes and will cost around 60 euros.
