Ros is a river in Central Ukraine, carrying its waters to the Dnieper. Some researchers believe that the word "Rus" comes from the name of this Ukrainian river. How can Ros attract travelers and tourists? The pond is great for fishing and outdoor activities. In addition, a large number of attractions and scenic spots are located on its banks.
River Ros: photo and description
Ros originates from the village of Odintsy in Vinnitsa. Then it overcomes 345 kilometers of the Dnieper Upland and flows into the Dnieper near the village of Khreshchatyk, Cherkasy region. The total area of the river basin is 12.5 thousand km2. The largest tributaries are Molochnaya, Torts, Kotluy, Orekhovatka, Rostavitsa, Rosava, Kamenka.
Ros is a river, from the name of which many historians derive the word "Rus". It was on its banks that the ancient tribes of the glades and the Rus lived. By the way, in the annals, along with the name "Ros", the river is also often referred to as "Red", which means "beautiful".
The river valley has one interesting feature: almost along its entire length, its right slope is much higher and steeper than the left one. In many areas, the channel of the reservoir crosses outcrops of solid crystalline rocks. Beautiful rapids and small waterfalls have formed in such places.
The largest settlements that the Ros River passes on its way: Bila Tserkva, Pogrebishche, Rokytnoye, Boguslav, Korsun-Shevchenkovsky. Dozens of villages with a long history are located on its banks.
Fishing and outdoor activities
The Ros River is one of the most picturesque in Ukraine. On its banks you can see beautiful pine forests, grandiose granite rocks, ancient wooden temples, water mills made of granite blocks.
Its bed is ideal for organizing water trips and kayaking. The shores will delight vacationers with picturesque landscapes, clean beaches and convenient parking areas.
Fishing on the Ros River also leaves a lot of positive emotions. About 40 species of fish are found in its waters. The most common among them are oatmeal, bleak, roach, dace and rudd. Less common are catfish, carp, loach, pike and bream. Silver carp and grass carp are found in ponds and artificial reservoirs.
To hope for a big catch, you should drive away from cities or large villages, where fish have been getting scarcer lately.
The Ros River is not only about fishing and beach holidays. Along its banks are many historicalcultural and architectural monuments. Most of them are concentrated in three cities, which will be discussed later.
Bila Tserkva
Bila Tserkva is the first city downstream. True, initially it had a different name - Yuryev. The city was founded in 1032 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise himself. The Castle Hill, which was and remains the historical core of this settlement, has been preserved here. True, there is no longer a lock on it.
Bila Tserkva is known for Oleksandria, the largest dendrological park in Ukraine. It was founded in the 18th century by Count Xavier Brannicki and named after his wife. The park is decorated with numerous ponds, cascades, bridges and sculptures.
Among other well-known sights of the city, it is worth highlighting the Transfiguration Cathedral built in 1839, the Church of St. John the Baptist (1812), the Trade Rows, the Taubin mansion. Several quarters of the old buildings of the city with dozens of Jewish houses of the 19th-20th centuries have been preserved.
Boguslav
Below the river is another remarkable city - Bohuslav. It was founded in the same distant 1032. Famous natives of this city are Marusya Boguslavka (Ukrainian folk heroine), as well as Ivan Soshenko (a close friend of Taras Shevchenko).
There are many tourist sites in Boguslav. These are a massive monument to Marusa Boguslavka, the Holy Trinity Church in the classical style, the memorial museum of Soshenok and others. Of great interest is the tract "Pit", located on Ros. This is an impressive river canyon with steepgranite shores and a cozy beach.
Korsun-Shevchenkovsky
Earlier, this glorious city in the Cherkasy region was simply called Korsun. But in Soviet times, they decided to add the prefix "Shevchenkovskiy" to his name, so that no one would forget that it was in these parts that the great Ukrainian poet was born.
Tourists are not in a hurry to come to Korsun-Shevchenkovsky yet. However, for many travelers this city becomes a real discovery. The most picturesque banks of the Ros, pine forests with the purest air, flooded granite quarries - all this creates excellent conditions for recreation here. In Korsun there is also a complex of buildings of the Lopukhins' estate (XVIII century) with a park.
