All international airports are assigned a unique letter identifier to help convey navigational information. The civil airport of Montenegro - Podgorica, located 11 km from the country's capital of the same name, received the abbreviated name TGD airport from the international civil aviation organization. This is due to the fact that earlier the city of Podgorica was called Titograd.
In 2007, Podgorica's TGD Airport received the "Best Airport" award for serving up to 1 million passengers a year.
Construction of a new terminal
Due to the increase in passenger traffic to the TGD airport, it has ceased to cope with its functions. The Montenegrin authorities decided to open a new modern terminal - it began operating in mid-May 2016 and is ready to serve up to a million passengers a year. The runway lighting system has been improved and taxiways have been refurbished.
Specifications
The new airport building is a metal and glass structure with original indirect lighting.
Airport area - 5500 m22, there are 8 check-in counters. The length of the runway is only 2500 m, which does not allow to receive large aircraft.
Service
International TGD Airport in Podgorica has a duty-free trade zone, a currency exchange office, a branch of the national bank, several cafes and a car rental service. There is a car park on the territory of the terminal where you can leave your car for long-term parking.
Several business lounges and free WI-FI are available to passengers.
Although the airport is considered 24/7, its normal operating hours are from 6:00 to 23:00.
Which airlines fly to TGD airport
Due to the fact that tourism is one of the main components of the economy for Montenegro, there are a lot of travelers here. Charter planes from all over the world arrive at the international Montenegrin TGD airport. The country, which has an unusually beautiful and untouched nature, is very attractive for tourists. Another positive thing is that Russians do not need a Schengen visa to visit the country.
The airport code TGD does not interfere with the use of another name for this place - "Heart of Montenegro". This name was given to him by the locals, and it is justified. Flights are carried out by both domestic and international airlines. The airport is the base for the national air carrier Montenegro Airlines. But long-distance departures and arrivals take place mainly at the neighboring Tivat airport.
The busiest period here is from April to October.
From Podgorica Airport, airlines depart for flights to the following destinations:
- Austrian Airlines - Vienna;
- Montenegro Airlines - inmost European cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris, Rome, Naples, Vienna and others;
- Ryanair - London;
- Turkish Airlines - Istanbul;
- AirSerbia - Belgrade.
How to get to the city
At the exit from the terminal there is a bus stop and a taxi rank, from where you can get to the popular resorts of Montenegro.
A bus ticket that will take you to the center of the capital costs about 15 euros one way. Buses depart from the stop at the airport terminal at intervals of one hour.
It is recommended to use the services of local taxis only in extreme cases. The price of the trip will be unreasonably high, and you will have to travel along dangerous mountain roads.
Incidents
On September 11, 1973, a Serbian airline's JAT Airways plane crashed in the Maganik Mountains, just north of Podgorica. All 41 passengers and crew on board were killed.
On January 25, 2005, a Montenegrin airlines plane, having broken its landing gear, left the runway. Landing was carried out in difficult conditions: at night with heavy snowfall. After the breakdown, the Fokker 100 aircraft slid along the runway for almost a kilometer. All passengers survived, the pilots were injured.
