North Dakota is a state located in the central part of the northern United States. Its population is more than six hundred and eighty thousand people, of which women are two-tenths more than men. Of the nationalities, most Germans (44%) and Norwegians (30%).

This state in the northern part of the US is part of the Northwest Center.

The capital is Bismarck and the largest cities are Fargo, which is larger than the capital, Minot and Grand Forks.

North Dakota is home to two US air bases.

Officially nicknamed "Sioux Indian State", "Garden Peace State" and "Ground Squirrel State" are also common.

History

In the late thirties of the eighteenth century, North Dakota was first settled by Europeans who were French-Canadian in origin. Their relations with the local Indian tribes were quite friendly and good-neighbourly, they traded furs and hunted.

In 1803, after the Louisiana Purchase, most of the statepassed into the possession of the United States, and in 1818 the northeastern region, which belonged to Great Britain, was acquired. Until 1870, there was a continuous influx of immigrants, as well as a war with the local population - the Sioux Indians. On November 2, 1889, North Dakota became the 39th state of the United States.

Geographic Information

The state has an area of 183,272 square kilometers - 19th among the states. Almost all space, over 97% land.

Neighbouring states are Minnesota to the east, South Dakota to the south, Montana to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan with Manitoba to the north.

Most of the territories are occupied by plains. In the northeast, their height is more than three hundred and fifty meters, and in the northeast - up to a thousand. The central region is occupied by the Missouri Plateau, which is part of the Great Plains. The largest river is the Missouri, the lakes are Devils Lake and Sakakavia.

Types of soil - chernozem-like and gray forest. They are subject to severe erosion.

Climate

Since this state in the north of the USA is located in the very center of the mainland, its climate type is continental. Summers are hot here and winters are cold. The temperature in January ranges from -8 to -16, and in July - from 18 to +24 degrees Celsius. Rainfall averages between 22 and 56 mm/year, with frequent flooding in the Red River Valley during the spring.

Tourists can visit the State Heritage Center,located in Bismarck, as well as the famous National Park, founded in honor of one of the most famous US presidents - Theodore Roosevelt.

Culture

North Dakota is famous for its special love for music, which is represented here by numerous genres. For example, the legendary Johnny Lang plays blues, Lynn Anderson plays country, Peggy Lee plays jazz and pop.

Economy

As of 2005, the state had a GDP of $24 billion and a GDP per capita of $39,594 (thirty-seventh in the US). Industry in North Dakota is poorly developed, the most common occupations are the cultivation of various cereals and animal husbandry. But there are plenty of mineral reserves here: a huge amount of brown coal, large deposits of oil, uranium, natural gas.
