About the airport
In 1923, the authorities of the Tambov province bought the first plane in the region. It was needed to combat agricultural pests and to extinguish forest fires. In 1930 the Tambov Aviation School was opened. There they trained pilots and aviation technicians. After 2 years, the aviation club was opened.
In the post-war period, the modernization of old and the construction of new airports began. The airport complex and the runway were built in the 70s. At the same time, the expansion of the geography of flights from the Tambov airport begins. And already in 1990 there were more than 30 destinations.
The 1990s marked a turning point in the development of civil aviation. The Tambov airport began to serve a smaller number of flights, passenger traffic fell to a critical level. In the period from 1997 to 2009, flights from it were not carried out. Only in 2010, regular Moscow flights resumed.
Today, flights depart from here only to Sochi (in summer) and Moscow, and the maximum passenger flow is 100 people per hour.
The runway is made of concrete and is over 2000 meters long.designed for receiving and sending aircraft of the ATP-72, Yak-40, L-410 types. The only airline serviced here is UTair Express.
