Syktyvkar International Airport is the main airport of the Komi Republic and the only one in the city; Komiaviatrans airlines are based at the Syktyvkar airport.

History

The history of civil aviation of the Republic of Komi and the city of Syktyvkar begins in 1925, when a seaplane first landed on the Sysol River. Since then, aircraft have begun to land on water or on snow at convenient locations near the city.

The first airport in Ust-Sysolsk (the former name of Syktyvkar) was created in 1929. It was a barrack-type building with one runway and was located on the same place where the modern airport stands. In the 1930s, long, regular flights began to open to Vorkuta, Kirov and Arkhangelsk, and the technical staff consisted of more than a dozen aircraft.

The new large airport Syktyvkar and its modern terminal were built in 1967. Today it is a class B airport, serving an average of 750 people per day and about 20 flights per day.

Characteristic

The length of the only runway of the Syktyvkar airport is 2.5 thousand meters, and the width is 50 meters. itallows the airport to receive medium-weight aircraft. The types of the largest aircraft landing in Syktyvkar vary from Tu-204 and AirbusA320 to Il-76 and An-12.

Two terminals, domestic and international, were reconstructed and renovated in 2011, and in 2012 it was decided to continue the construction of the Syktyvkar-South airport. In the 80s. the construction of a new large airfield 20 km from the city was frozen, and now it is planned to attract investments to complete the project.

Location

The airport is located within the city, a 10-minute walk from the motor transport station, from where buses leave for other cities of the Komi Republic. The central railway station is located 4 km from the airport, and the central park. Michurin is a 20-minute walk away.

Practically the city was built around the airport, since Ust-Sysolsk was quite small, the first building of the air station was originally outside the city, in the town of Kirul. Today, the name of the place is preserved in the heritage of the city as the Kirul market, which is located just outside the territory.

How to get there

Despite its convenient location, it is not easy for guests of the capital of the Komi Republic to find Syktyvkar Airport. A taxi that overcomes this distance is 10 minutes, during rush hour it can go 20-25 minutes. It is best to call a taxi by phone, otherwise there is a risk of overpaying twice as much.
