History of Arkhipo-Osipovka

According to historians, the first settlements appeared in these places about two hundred thousand years ago. Even in the Bronze Age, tribes of dolmen culture lived here. Approximately in the VIII-VI centuries BC. e. in this area, tribes of warlike Achaeans appeared, who were one of the direct ancestors of the current Adyghe-Circassians. In the 5th-6th centuries A. D. e. most of the Caucasian coast was called Zikhia. In the vicinity of Arkhipo-Osipovka, many ancient burial mounds with various types of burials are scattered.

After the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus departed from Russia in 1829, the creation of the coastline began, a number of new fortifications were built. In 1837, General Velyaminov ordered the construction of another fortress near the Wulan River. On July 29, the first stone of a new settlement, called Mikhailovskoye, was laid.

During the war with the highlanders in 1840, the fortress was attacked. The forces were unequal, and everything could end in the defeat of the garrison, but a soldier named Arkhip Osipov blew up a powder warehouse. The fortress flew into the air, and the enemies were destroyed. In place of the blown up fortification, a six-meter cast-iron openwork cross was installed on a stone pedestal. A staircase leads to it, at the foot of which two old cannons stand guard.

At the request of local residents in 1889, the village of Vulanskaya was renamed - she was given the name of a soldier who accomplished a feat - Arkhipo-Osipovka.
