The Republic of Bashkortostan is a subject of the Russian Federation, named after the indigenous people living in this territory - the Bashkirs. It is located exactly on the border of Asia and Europe in the southern part of the high Ural Mountains. The Republic of Bashkortostan belongs to the Volga Federal District and ranks seventh in Russia in terms of population - more than five million people. The main industries, especially developed in this region, are petrochemical, chemical, fuel and energy complex, metalworking, mechanical engineering, food industry and agriculture. Annually, more than 13% of the volume of the so-called gross regional product within the Volga District and about 2.7-2.9% of the all-Russian volume is produced here. The largest cities of Bashkortostan, which account for the greatest load, are Ufa, Salavat, Sterlitamak, Neftekamsk, Tuymazy and Oktyabrsky. Their populationis also the largest.
City of Ufa
The capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan is one of the fifteen million-plus cities of the Russian Federation. It was founded in 1574 right on the banks of the river called Belaya. Occupying an area of more than 700 sq. km, the city stretches from the southwest to the northeast for as much as fifty kilometers. The main industries in which most of the population is employed are engineering and oil refining. The basis of the capital's economy is the fuel and energy complex. In addition, woodworking, food and light industries are very well developed here.
City of Sterlitamak
The second place in the ranking of "the largest cities of the Republic of Bashkortostan" is the city of Sterlitamak. It is located one hundred and twenty kilometers south of the capital and is an important center for mechanical engineering and the chemical industry. The population of such a city of Bashkortostan as Sterlitamak is about six hundred to seven hundred thousand people. This is a developed industrial settlement with an established transport system and a complete infrastructure. Sterlitamak's economy is based on various petrochemical and chemical enterprises.
City of Salavat
The largest cities of Bashkortostan include one of the centers of the so-called South Bashkortostan agglomeration - the city of Salavat. It is located one hundred and sixty kilometers south of the capital. This is a fairly powerful production center, the numberwhose population is steadily approaching the mark of seven hundred thousand. Such cities of Bashkortostan as Salavat are regional centers of the oil refining and chemical industries. It currently produces liquid fuels, high density polyethylene, butyl alcohols and nitrogen fertilizers. In addition, factories for the production of metal structures, technical glass, mineral wool and reinforced concrete products operate in the city.
October City
Speaking of the largest population centers of Bashkortostan, it is impossible not to mention Oktyabrsky. This city was founded in 1937 in the west of the republic, one hundred and eighty kilometers from Ufa. Its area is about ninety-nine square kilometers. This settlement has a significant mineral resource base to ensure the production of various building materials. For example, sands for concrete and sand and gravel mixtures are released to the Russian market by the city of Oktyabrsky. Bashkortostan, thanks to the latter, is also famous for its fuel industry.
