Suvorovskaya Square was also known as Ekaterininskaya Square in the period before 1917. From 1932 to 1994 it was also named after the Commune. You can find it if you go to the Meshchansky district, which is located in the administrative district of the capital in the center.
How to get there
There is an opportunity to get out here along the streets of Durov, Samotechnaya, Seleznevskaya, Dostoevsky, Oktyabrskaya, Soviet Army. How did Suvorovskaya Square get its current name?
Earlier, the name was associated with an institute dedicated to Catherine, in which noble maidens were brought up. After the dedication to the Commune in 1994, this place was named after the famous commander who fought in the Russian troops.
Creation
Suvorovskaya Square has an ancient history. In the 15th century, there was still a channel along which the Nadprudnaya River flowed, which is also called Sinichka and Samoteka. Its waters connected with the Neglinnaya precisely in the area where the inhabitants of the capital are now peacefully walking around. In the 16th century, they began to develop this territory and in 1630 they started building a church dedicated to John the Warrior.
The 18th century was notable for the fact that Moscow continued to develop rapidly. Suvorovskaya Square in the future will appear on the ground near the S altykov estate against the backdrop of a beautiful park, which was also laid out to ennoble the city.
1807 was remembered for the fact that then the Catherine Institute was created on the basis of the estate. Since then, young girls have been trained within its walls. The same name is given to a park full of beautiful plants nearby. Suvorovskaya Square, as part of this complex, was also dedicated to the name of the Empress.
Changes
During the 20-30s of the 20th century, it was time for radical changes that affected this place. The Nadprudnaya river was enclosed in a pipe cavity for flowing along its entire length. A space for a public garden was organized in the center of the project. Until some time, it was decorated with the Church of St. John the Warrior in Moscow. Suvorovskaya Square can no longer boast of this building, it was demolished.
In 1947, the TsDKA hotel was erected on that site, which was later renamed Slavyanka. During the period from 1935 to 1940, a theater dedicated to the Red Army was built in the north of the territory, a beautiful monumental structure. Now, having come here, we will see a beautiful building named after the Russian Army.
Many tourists come here to stay in the Slavyanka hotel complex.
Suvorovskaya Square has seen many changes. For example, in 1928, the Catherine Institute was rebuilt and an institution dedicated to the Red Army was placed there. Nearby erectedFrunze monument. Since 1928, the face of Suvorov has also adorned the local area.
After 12 years, Suvorovskaya Square was also named in honor of the commander. The metro nearby is working properly and transports people from different parts of the city.
Shape
This place is shaped like an oval. There is a slight elongation when viewed to the northwest from the southeast. Between Olympic Avenue and Samotechnaya Street there is a park, which is connected to beautiful plantations in the south.
The most important part of this complex can be called two large buildings: the former Catherine Institute, which stretched out to the east and the Theater of the Russian Army located in the north.
The center of the square has a flower garden with a monument in the middle. To the north you can find the entrance to the neighboring Ekaterininsky Park.
Important Buildings
The most interesting architectural building that you can see here is the S altykovs' house, which later began to serve the purposes of science. The central branch was built in 1779 in order to provide housing for Count S altykov, who at that time held the position of vice-governor of the city of Moscow. This project was designed by D. Ukhtomsky.
From 1802 to 1807 the central part was rebuilt in accordance with the design of Gilardi Giovanni. Two outbuildings have been added. The years from 1818 to 1827 were characterized by the fact that the building was expanded and the facade was redesigned. During the period from 1918 to 1928, he put his hand to the Toporov building, creating a project to restore the front flight of stairs.
In addition, here you can find an academic theater created in the shape of a star with five ends. Each beam was surrounded by columns. Construction was completed in 1941. The architects of the project were Alabyan and Simbirtsev. You can feel all the features of totalitarian architecture if you look at the Slavyanka Hotel, built in 1947.
It is also extremely interesting here to look at the monument to Suvorov, which was installed in 1982 under the guidance of the sculptor Komov and architect Nesterov, as well as the Frunze monument, whose erection was carried out by E. Vuchetich in 1960.
