St. Petersburg is considered the Northern Capital, but the branching of the local subway is much inferior to Moscow. But its stations practically do not differ in uniqueness and beauty. It is enough to take a ride along at least one of the subway lines.

Fifth line of St. Petersburg metro

There are only 5 lines in the St. Petersburg subway. Their official names are used more often in tourist booklets and city guides. Citizens call metro lines by numbers. So the purple metro line in St. Petersburg is more familiar as the "Fifth Line" or "Line No. 5".

It connected the Primorsky north-west of the city, through the central part with the south-eastern Frunzensky district. By 2018, there are 12 stations on this line:

  • "Danube";
  • Prospect of Glory.

This is an extension of the line in a southerly direction, and the construction of four more stations in the northern direction is planned by the metro management.

Not everyone remembers and navigates by official names. This is the Frunzensko-Primorskaya line and, if you are wondering what the purple metro line in St. Petersburg is called, then you need to buy a subway card or a city map. And interestingly, there are Frunzenskaya and Primorskaya stations on other branches. And the names of the districts connected by the Fifth Line are involved in the name of this one.

Technical details of the line operation

December 2008 is considered the beginning of full operation. Prior to that, since December 1991, only the northern stations connected to the Pravoberezhnaya branch (Line Four) participated in the transportation of passenger traffic.

The total length of the Frunzensko-Primorskaya line is 18.1 kilometers, and with three new stations it will increase to 20.1 kilometers. Trains run here at intervals of 2 to 10 minutes. And the operating hours of all stations are approximately the same: 05:30 - 00:00. And only on holidays it can change.

Interesting facts

And this is where the deepest station in Russia is located. This is "Admir alteyskaya", located at a depth of 102 meters. It belongs to the purple metro line in St. Petersburg.

  • The most beautiful station on the line, and in the entire St. Petersburg metro, is considered Obvodnaya.
  • The Admir alteiskaya station was laid and finished the longest - from 1997 to December 2011.

The station "Sportivnaya" of the purple line of the St. Petersburg metro has an exit, 300 meters long, to Vasilyevsky Island. This is the world's only (!) two-tier metro station

The entire Frunzensko-Primorskaya line of the St. Petersburg metro passes under Malaya, Srednyaya and Bolshaya Nevka, and the section between Admir alteiskaya and Sportivnaya runs under Bolshaya Neva.
