General information about Lake Pskov

Name of Lake Pskov

In fact, Lake Pskov has several names. In most cases, it is called Chudsko-Pskovskoe. This is due to the close location of the city of Pskov, as well as the fact that a very long time ago the lake was called the old Russian word with the root “chud”. Some tribes (Ests, Finno-Ugrians and some others) were called at that time "wonderful people", that is, those who were not like the rest. And precisely because these people lived here, the lake was christened in this way.

There are also other names: Peipsi-järv and Peipus. They all have their own history.

Pskov Lake in history

In ancient chronicles, this territory is mentioned as the area where the Battle on the Ice took place. Here Alexander Nevsky defended his land fromenemy attack. According to ancient records, the battle took place in early April 1242. The exact place of the event was mentioned here: “On Lake Peipsi, on Uzmen, at Voronei’s stone.” This entry was made by one of the participants in the battle, that is, the information was obtained, one might say, firsthand. But what does it mean?

“On Lake Peipsi” is a general landmark, that is, the place where the “wonderful” people lived. The expression "at Uzmeni" explains the narrowness of the strait. But the third designation, “at Raven’s stone,” speaks of the specific location of the ongoing battle.

Flora and fauna

The vegetation of Lake Pskov is rich and varied. On the banks of the reservoir, reeds and reeds grow to a greater extent. In those places where the rocks protect from the winds, you can find vegetation such as water mannik, broad-leaved handrail, titnik, calamus, narrow-leaved cattail, fescue reed, silty horsetail and some others.

As for those plants that develop directly on the water, here they are extremely rare. As a rule, these include amphibian buckwheat and arrowhead.
