St. Petersburg is rich in attractions that attract tourists from all over the world. But every citizen has his own history of relations with the city. In the families of native Petersburgers, it has been written over the years by several generations. In addition to famous monuments, palaces and embankments, beloved by tourists, St. Petersburg residents are also familiar with another St. Petersburg. And everyone has his own. One of the townspeople's favorite places is Engels Avenue, on the site of which the Vyborg road passed even before the founding of the city. The avenue received its modern name in 1918 in honor of one of the founders of Marxism. Now Engels Avenue, which has a length of 11 km, is one of the largest arteries of St. Petersburg. It is loved by the townspeople, first of all, for its long history. In 1834, on the site where the avenue now passes, the Church of Prince Vladimir was erected, which stood for almost a century and was blown up in 1932. In the depths, away from the avenue, stands the Lansky Manor, built in 1801 and reconstructed in 2009.
In 1929, when the entire even side of the street was already built up, the first tram was launched along Engels Avenue. And already in 1970, the avenue was extended forPoklonnogorskaya street along the lands of the state farm "Prigorodny" to the district railway. Further important events that happened to him are already connected with the present. So, in 2002, after the opening of the first section of the ring road in St. Petersburg, part of the avenue was reconstructed and connected to the Ring Road. Currently, both parts of the avenue are connected by an overpass, and a new section of the Priozerskoye Highway was built on its continuation behind the ring road.
Now Engels Prospekt crosses Svetlanovskaya Square, passes next to the Udelnaya metro station and goes to Poklonnaya Gora, crossing the district railway line, runs through the historical district of Parnassus and ends outside the Piterskaya Ring Road.
In addition to the avenue in St. Petersburg, a city in the Samara region is also named after the famous philosopher and public figure Friedrich Engels. Continuing the theme of revolutionary figures, Volzhsky Prospekt Engels - part of the Samara embankment is located in the Oktyabrsky and Leninsky districts. Volzhsky Prospekt, like Engels Prospect, has its own long history.
Of course, its current appearance and extent no longer resembles what it was in the 19th century. Many historical buildings built on both sides of it were destroyed. Now it is of great functional importance, being an important transport artery of the city. But, despite this, Petersburgers, who are familiar with the history of their native places, remember the history of this avenue.
Sorry, most residents of modern cities, who are well aware of recognized local attractions, rarely think about the fact that, in addition to official historical monuments, other places with their rich history have been preserved, albeit not in their original form. In any case, this avenue can rightly be considered one of those places that must be visited without fail.
