This is a small country on the Balkan Peninsula (southwestern part). The area of its territory is about 14 thousand square meters. km. However, in such a small area, four natural and climatic zones can be distinguished: flat (extends to Lake Skadar), coastal, highlands, and plateaus. The land borders of the state stretch for 625 kilometers. In the west, for 25 kilometers, Montenegro borders on Croatia, in the northwest - on Herzegovina and Bosnia (the length of the border is 225 kilometers), in the east - on Kosovo (about 79 km), in the northeast, the common border with Serbia (124 km), and the southeastern territory borders with Albania (about 172 km).

The total length of the coastal part of Montenegro is 293.5 km. The state includes sea islands in the amount of 14 pieces. In the northwest there is a large bay of Boka Kotorska, the area of the water surface of which is 87.3 square meters. km. It crashes into land for almost 30 kilometers. To the south of Boka Kotorska there are small bays of Žukovac Luka and Trašte, as well as several bays. The main sea resorts are located on the Budva Riviera.

The territory of the country can be conditionally divided into three main regions: the Adriatic coast, the mountain systems of the northeastern region of the country,almost flat basin of Lake Skadar and river valleys, carrying their waters into the reservoir. The latter region contains the two largest cities in Montenegro: Niksic and Podgorica.

The uniqueness of this region was recognized as early as 1878. At that time, the lands of this area were donated to the Montenegrin ruler - Prince Nikola Petrovich - and declared a princely reserve. This happened after the liberation of the lands from the Turks.

The title of a national park was officially awarded to this region only in 1952. In these places, incredibly rich and untouched nature - mountain rivers, relict forest, snow-white peaks of the mountains, the highest of which is Chrna-Glava (2139 m).
