Austria is a federal state in the central part of Europe. One of the richest countries in the world, the first mention of it in documents from 996. Over the centuries, many interesting architectural creations have been created on the territory of the country, many natural reservoirs have been preserved, so there are a lot of sights in Austria and you should definitely see them with your own eyes.

The country is divided into 9 federal states, each of which has a number of points of interest.

Metropolitan City of Vienna

This is not only the center of Austria, but also the largest settlement in the country. About 2 million inhabitants live here. For several centuries, the residence of the Habsburgs was located in the city. For this and other reasons, the capital attracts many tourists.

The Vienna Opera was built in 1869 and is one of the main sights of Vienna and Austria. The opera opened with a production of Don Juan, balls were held here, to which all young girls aspired. In 1945, this place was partially damaged duringbombing. For 10 years after that, the building was restored. Today, performances and other events are regularly staged at the opera.

The Belvedere palace complex, built in the 18th century, is one of the largest and most beautiful buildings in the capital. There is an art gallery in the upper part of the palace, where you can even see the works of Oskar Kokoschka. On December evenings, a Christmas market takes place on the territory near the building.

The Royal Burgtheater is one of the oldest sights in Vienna (Austria). It used to be a ball game. But Empress Maria Theresa in 1741 decided to rebuild the building into a theater. Now it is the most beautiful Gothic building in the city, on the stage of which about 800 performances are staged per season, and the stage area is 700 square meters. m.

Federal states of Burgenland

These territories are located in the east of the country and are the least populated. These are the youngest lands of the country and received their status only in 1921, but this does not mean at all that there are few interesting places here.

These are the former lands of the Hungarian Esterhazy family. Prince Paul built his own parish on the hill, which travelers now come to see. Now there are 10 chapels, 18 altars, many beautiful grottoes and niches, about 200 sculptures. The Haydn mausoleum is located on the territory of the complex.

Forchtenstein Castle The castle is located almost on the border with Hungary (9 km). It was built in 1400-1450. The oldest part is the bergfried, 50 meters high. The castle has many secret passages and cellars. Inside, the building was rebuilt several times, but the exterior has remained the same.
Schloss Halbturn This palace is another tourist attraction in Austria. It was built in 10 years, from 1701 to 1711. This is a baroque castle and is also located near the border with Hungary - 3 km. The palace was often rebuilt, in 1949 there was a fire that damaged a significant part of the building, which could not be restored. The complex also has a famous baroque park.

These lands are located in the west of the country, and their capital is the city of Klagenfurt (Austria). There are a lot of attractions in the city. These are old courtyards and streets, between which there are shops and restaurants. In the central part there is a stone symbol of the capital - the dragon Lindwurm. And all this beauty is located among the hills, not far from Lake Wörte See, which, by the way, is the warmest of all alpine reservoirs.

Opposite the fountain with the dragon is the town hall, built in 1582, and a statue of Maria Theresa. Here you can also see the Landhaus, built in 1590, it is an architectural creation of the Renaissance.

There are about 20 ancient castles in the city, which were built mainly in the 16th century, althoughmost are in private hands. The most famous is the castle of Maria Loretto, Hochosterwitz, which can be seen in the movie Cinderella.

You can also visit the city of Villach, which is the oldest on this earth. It is believed that it was founded in the 4th century BC. This place is famous for the ruins of the medieval castle Landskron and ski resorts.

Lower Austria

This federal state is located in the north-west of the country, with the administrative center in the city of St. Pölten (60 kilometers from Vienna).

There are many resorts here:

  • thermal "Baden near Vienna";
  • Ski Semmering.

St. Polten is the oldest city and the youngest capital. There are several monasteries and abbeys in the city: Zwettl, Geras, Altenburg, Melk, Seitensteten.

Upper Austria

This is the northernmost part of the country. In the administrative center of the federal state,the city of Linz (Austria), there are a huge number of attractions, first of all, these are:

And in the high-mountainous alpine regions of the earth there is the Kalkalpen National Park, where you can see animals, roe deer and capercaillie, deer and black grouse from a short distance.

Salzburg

Perhaps, almost every person who loves to travel regards these federal lands as one of the main attractions of the Republic of Austria. There are some must-see places here.

Mount Kapuzinerberg It is 640 meters high, and in order to climb it, you need to move along a very steep staircase. This is one of the 3 hills on which the city is located, on top of which there is a monastery built at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries.
