Budva Riviera attractions
It must be said that the resort towns of this region areattractions. Original architecture, magnificent nature, clean air - all this attracts tourists. But there are also interesting monuments of history and architecture that must be seen. We will talk about some of them in our article.
Praskvica Monastery
An old legend says that the Praskvitsa monastery appeared on this land in 1050. At that time, the Old Slavic state of Zeta, which was located in these places, was led by Stefan Vojislav.
Ancient monastic cloister got its name because of a curious natural phenomenon. In spring, when streams flow from the mountains, the air here is filled with the aroma of peaches. Praske means "peach" in the local dialect.
Unfortunately, the original church has not survived to this day. In 1812, it was destroyed by French troops, and the monastery was plundered. The new building was erected in the 19th century. During the design of the new temple, fragments of the fresco painting of the old building were used, which miraculously survived. The main work on the painting of the church was carried out by the famous Greek icon painter Nikola Aspioti.
Praskvitsa Monastery was once assisted by Russian sovereigns. Documents from the Russian Imperial Court are still preserved in the vaults.
There is one small temple in the monastery complex - the Church of the Holy Trinity. Its creation dates back to the 17th century. In addition, the parish of the monastery includes churches that are outside the monastery walls - the church of St. Stephen, the church of St. Alexander Nevskyand the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Lord.
In 1979, during an earthquake, the monastery complex was seriously damaged. Some of the buildings were restored, the rest are being reconstructed today. Construction work does not prevent Praskvica from remaining an active male monastery.
Toplica Palace
At the end of the 19th century, the luxurious residence of Peter Karageorgievich, the son-in-law of the Montenegrin Tsar Nikola I, appeared in Novy Bar. The magnificent palace complex was later called Toplice. It includes the Big and Small palaces, two gardens - winter and botanical. There is a park around the palace.
Today, the local history museum and various exhibition halls operate in the premises of the palaces. In the expositions you can see historical, archaeological and ethnographic collections. They acquaint visitors with the history of Montenegro in sufficient detail.
Fortress of Castio
The Budva Riviera has very ancient historical monuments on its territory. To see one of them, you need to go to the small town of Petrovac. In its architecture, it resembles an amphitheater, since numerous villas, mini-hotels and cottages are built from the very top of the slope to the sea.
Castio Fortress is located on the city beach, in its northern part. At the top of the building today is a memorial. In it you can see a memorial plaque dedicated to the fallen soldiers of Montenegro and Petrovarets in World War II.
St. Nicholas Island
The island got its name in honor of the smallmedieval church. It was built in the 16th century. Apart from this church and the ancient graves surrounding it, there is nothing on the island. It is completely uninhabited. Local researchers believe that crusaders who died during a terrible plague epidemic are buried in these graves.
The island of St. Nicholas is very picturesque. Its entire territory is covered with evergreen vegetation. Various animals and birds live here. Perhaps that is why in recent years people who are tired of the hustle and bustle prefer to relax here. Here you can retire on small, but very cozy sandy beaches.
