Irish air carrier Ryanair is Europe's leading low-cost carrier with flights to more than 30 countries. In addition, Ryanair's prices are officially recognized as one of the lowest among all low-cost airlines. For the most part, this is due to additional requirements and restrictions. Therefore, in order to really save money and not pay additional fees to the airline, you need to clearly know the baggage rules and the allowable dimensions of hand luggage at Ryanair.
Ryanair baggage rules
Ryanair wouldn't be called a low-cost airline if it didn't charge extra for luggage. One passenger can purchase up to two pieces of checked baggage weighing up to 20 kg each, measuring 81 x 119 x 119 cm.
The fee is constantly changing depending on the season, and if the flight from Budapest toMilan in the non-tourist season, the cost of the first bag will be about 15 euros, then when flying to the Canary Islands in the high season, the amount of the surcharge for the second bag will be about 150 euros. Baggage must be checked in at least 40 minutes before departure, and it is better to pay in advance when buying a ticket or at least before online check-in: this service will cost much more at the airport. And if, upon arriving at the airport, it suddenly turns out that the size of the suitcase is suitable for Ryanair's hand luggage, then the cost of the service fee can be easily returned by contacting the representatives of the low-cost airline at the airport.
What baggage can I carry for free?
The ticket price of the Irish low-cost airline includes the right to carry two pieces of hand luggage for free. Ryanair's carry-on suitcase size is 55 x 40 x 20 cm. A duty-free bag or a handbag will only be allowed in the cabin if its length, width and height is no more than 35 x 20 x 20 cm. In addition to the size of hand luggage, for Ryanair, weight is also important: the allowable weight is 10 kg for one item.
At the same time, if in a regular airline the “overweight” can be offered to be divided between people traveling together, this is prohibited by the rules of the Irish low-cost airline. There is also no list of items that you can additionally take into the cabin of the aircraft: a case with a laptop, flowers, a bag of duty free - you have tochoose one thing and only one thing that corresponds to the dimensions of hand luggage indicated by Ryanair. The only exception exists for mothers traveling with babies, for the needs of a child under 2 years old, an additional (optional) transport of a car seat or a folding stroller is allowed, which will have to be checked in at the gangway in a special luggage compartment.
By the way, each passenger also needs to be prepared for the fact that Ryanair reserves the right to require customers to check in a large piece of hand luggage in the luggage compartment when boarding the aircraft. After the flight, the suitcase will be available at the regular baggage claim. Only passengers who have purchased a Priority pass for €10 in advance on the airline's website can be guaranteed to carry large hand luggage into the Ryanair cabin.
How is Ryanair carry-on baggage checked?
When boarding a large suitcase or bag, airline employees almost always weigh and ask to be placed in a special frame.
This frame immediately allows you to draw conclusions about the compliance of luggage with the dimensions of Ryanair hand luggage. If the bag does not fit, or the edges of the suitcase go beyond the upper border of the frame, the passenger may either be denied boarding altogether or be required to check in hand luggage in the luggage compartment (you will have to pay extra from 30 to 70 euros for this). In any case, it is better to be prepared for this situation and evaluate in advance in the registration hall in one of theframe Ryanair dimensions and weight of hand luggage.
Rules for the carriage of non-standard items
Items such as a suit, wedding dress, small musical instruments (such as a violin or guitar), sports or fishing equipment, bicycles, skateboards, etc. are allowed in the cabin of Ryanair at an additional cost.
Ryanair carry-on baggage allowance for non-standard items:
Name | Max weight | Collection |
Sport equipment | 20 kg | 50 EUR |
Musical instrument | 20 kg | 50 EUR |
Folded bike | 30kg | 50 EUR |
The main requirement for transported goods is that they must be registered on the owner's boarding pass (for this you need to pay a special service fee), correspond to the allowable size for Ryanair hand luggage, be properly secured and packed. That is, a protective case for equipment or a guitar is required, and the bike must be folded in a condition convenient for transportation.
If a person with a disability needs a wheelchair or crutches, they can be brought on board absolutely free of charge.
Ryanair's baggage rules state that even human ashes are allowed in hand luggage, but only if there arerelevant supporting documents (death certificate and cremation certificate).
Ryanair hand luggage liquids: how and how much
Ryanair's carry-on baggage policy for liquids (as well as gels, creams and aerosols) is the same as for any other airline. A separate container can be no more than 100 ml, and their total volume should not exceed more than 1 liter. It should be borne in mind that even if a few grams of toothpaste are left in a 500 ml tube, this will not convince airport employees, and they will have to part with the “extra” bottle.
All liquids must be packed in a transparent sealed bag and not hidden too deep - the security officer may ask to see the bag to make sure that the contents are really tightly packed and will not harm other passengers or the cabin of the aircraft.
Prohibited Items
Like any ultra-low cost airline, Ryanair has a list of items that cannot be taken on board. These restrictions include:
- oxygen - all oxygen cylinders must be checked in in the luggage compartment;
- animals – Ryanair basically has no conditions for transporting animals even in baggage compartments, the only exception is for guide dogs accompanying their owners, they are allowed to go directly to the aircraft cabin, for this you only need to notify the airline in advance and provide documents confirming the purpose of the dog and the possibilityhis entry into the country of destination;
- cargo - nothing but bags, backpacks and suitcases cannot be carried in the luggage compartment;
- electric bikes - so it is better to bring a passport confirming the absence of electric equipment with a transported and pre-packed bike.
