Saransk Airport is the air transport hub of the city of the same name in the Republic of Mordovia. It was founded in 1960. Work is currently underway to reconstruct it. In 2018, it is planned that Saransk (airport) will serve the participants and fans of the World Cup. How to get to it? Which airlines are served here?
History
The history of the development of air traffic in Mordovia begins in the late 1940s, when the Lyambir military airfield began to function as a transport hub. In 1955, a civil airport was opened in the city of Saransk, which was located near Gagarin Street. In 1960, not far from the city, in the vicinity of the village of Lukhovka, a modern airport was opened. By 1964, a new terminal building was erected. In 1981, a new concrete runway was built, designed to receive such large aircraft as the Tu-134 and Yak-42.
In the late 1980s, Saransk (airport) served more than 10,000 flights a year. 1990scharacterized by a decline in passenger traffic, which was a consequence of stagnation in the aviation industry. For the World Cup, which will be held in Russia in 2018, the airport is planned to be reconstructed. In 2015, Saransk Airport received the status of an international air transport hub.
Reconstruction of Saransk Airport
Initially, work on the reconstruction of the airport was planned to be carried out from 2013 to 2017, but they began a little later, despite the fact that they were timely funded. The backlog is explained by the failure of the construction contractor IC Aerodor to fulfill its direct obligations. Fines and forfeits were collected from him in court for postponing work.
During the reconstruction, it is planned to increase the size and upgrade the runway surface. Its length will be 3.221 km, and its width will be 45 m. The number of stops on the platform will increase to 20. Thanks to this, it will be possible to serve such airliners as the Boeing 737-800, Airbus A320 and other aircraft of the same takeoff weight. The former terminal building will be completely reconstructed, two additional terminals and two 50-bed hotels will also be built. The main platform and the terminal will be connected by a 900-meter road. The capacity of the air hub will reach 1360 passengers per hour.
Despite the fact that the work was repeatedly delayed, the modernization is almost completed. Now work on the reconstruction of the runway and the airport terminal, the road and the construction of hotels have already been completed. Terminal construction underway.
