Ulan-Ude Airport is a Russian air transport hub of federal importance. It serves both domestic and international flights. It is located near the capital of the Republic of Buryatia and Lake Baikal.
History
In 1925, Volkovoynov and Polyakov's planes landed on the territory of the modern Ulan-Ude airport, which participated in the flight on the Moscow-Beijing route. In 1926, the first regular flight to Ulaanbaatar was launched, and aircraft flying from Moscow to Vladivostok and from Irkutsk to Chita also began to land here.
In 1931, the construction of a new airfield complex began, until 1941 air traffic was actively developed on the territory of the republic.
The new concrete runway was built by 1971. At this time, the Ulan-Ude airport begins to receive domestic aircraft "Il-18". By 1981, the runway was modernized (it was increased by 0.8 km), parking lots for aircraft were built, which made it possible to receive Tu-154 airliners.
The new terminal building was put into operation in August 1983. By October of the same yearflights transferred from the Chita airport in connection with its repair began to be served here. In 1988-1989 the service of international transit and tourist flights begins, which were transferred here from the Irkutsk airport due to its reconstruction. During this period, the maximum workload of the air hub was observed: sometimes up to 70 flights were served per day.
In 1990, the annual volume of passenger traffic reached 800 thousand people. In 2001, the airline was divided into several organizations, as a result of which Ulan-Ude International Airport OJSC was formed.
In 2007, the runway and its lighting equipment were modernized, which made it possible to receive and depart aircraft of any type, regardless of the take-off weight and time of day. On June 1, 2010, regular flights to Ulaanbaatar were opened. On October 29, 2011, a flight was made to Bangkok. In 2012, direct flights were launched to Beijing, Antalya and Cam Ranh. In 2014, the number of passengers served was more than 312,000.

Initially, the main air hub of Buryatia was called Mukhino (after the name of the nearest settlement). In 2008, a new name was given to the Ulan-Ude airport - Baikal.
