Valaam is an archipelago of more than 50 islands separated by straits. The wondrous harsh nature disposes to prayer and spiritual searches.

According to legend, the first Christian community was founded here by the Apostle Andrew the First-Called.

Dramatic events and revival

The history of the Valaam Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior can be traced back to the 14th century, although, according to legend, it has existed since the 10th century.

It was repeatedly destroyed in hostilities with Sweden. In the 16th century, 34 monks were killed here who refused to change their faith. They were later canonized as saints.

The monastery was restored under Peter the Great, and then experienced dramatic events again in 1940.

Who comes to Valaam?

Inquisitive tourists from all over the world come to the island for excursions, volunteers involved in the restoration of the monastery, pilgrims who want to pray at the relics of St. Sergius and Herman of Valaam, St. Antipy, at other shrines, listen to the marvelous chant.

The island attracts history lovers, scientists, students.

Where to stay on the island for a few days?

There are three hotels on Valaam to accommodate guests.

In a fire in 2016, the monastery losttwo at once: "Attic" and "Winter", located in the same building.

Today, tourists and pilgrims can stay in the following Valaam hotels:

• “Hegumenskaya”;
• "Slavic";
• on the ship.

"Igumenskaya" is located not far from the Transfiguration Cathedral, in the monastery building, where cells have been converted into rooms. 19 double rooms and one single hotel on Valaam can accommodate 39 people. Facilities are provided in three sanitary blocks.

From the summer of 2016, you can stay on the ship "Admiral Kuznetsov", which is constantly at the pier.

New comfortable hotel

In 2011, another hotel was opened on Valaam - "Slavyanskaya". It was reconstructed after the fire, it used to be called "Summer". Located on the territory of the central estate.

In the middle of the building is the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius with a small dome with a cross that rises above the house, services are regularly held there.

This hotel in Valaam has 25 double rooms with modern amenities.
