South Station (Kharkiv)
South Station is the main railway station of Kharkiv, located in the city center, within the Kholodnogorsk district. Nearby is the metro station of the same name, through one of the exits of which you can get directly to the station building.
The station was opened in 1869. Throughout history, its main building was rebuilt three times. The one that can be seen now was built in the early 50s of the last century. This is a monumental, grandiose building in the Stalinist neoclassical style, with powerful columns, sculptures and two symmetrical towers 42 meters high. The main hall of the station with a spherical and generously painted ceiling resembles the interiors of a majestic cathedral.
The entire station complex includes the actual passenger station building, ticket offices, the Express Hotel (a nondescript gray building built in the late 70s), a baggage compartment, seven boarding platforms and two underground tunnels. Near the station there is a well-groomed and very cozy Station Square with fountains, flower beds and benches. In the warm season, it is incredibly pleasant to spend time here while waiting for your train.
Bus stations of the city of Kharkiv
Kharkov's bus stations are also an important part of the city's transport infrastructure. There are five in total (1, 2, 3, 4 and 6).
The first bus routes connected Kharkiv with other cities in the early 30s. However, at that time there was no specialized building for receiving and sending intercity flights. The main bus station of the city was built in 1957. It is located on Gagarin Avenue next to the Levada railway station. By the way, the building itself is made in the style of Stalinist neoclassicism, which is extremely rare among bus stations in the post-Soviet space. As a rule, they are all nondescript and inexpressive in terms of architecture.
From the main Kharkiv bus station you can go to a number of cities in Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, countries of Eastern and Western Europe.
