In Western Siberia, the Tom River flows - the right branch of the Ob. Tomsk Botanical Garden is located on the territory of Tomsk State University. It is a unique complex for the northern region. More than 6,000 plant species are listed in its funds, including 500 rare and endangered.
The total area on which the botanical garden (Tomsk) is spread is 126.5 hectares, of which:

- 10 hectares - protected area and greenhouse complex.

History of creation and development
Tomsk State University - the first Russian university in Siberia, opened in 1878. Already in 1875, when the construction of TSU was just beginning, a place was allocated in the project for a botanical garden. Tomsk is located on the border of the West Siberian Plain, the climate here is harsh, which required a particularly careful approach to the construction of greenhouses, nurseries and greenhouses. The garden was completed only in 1885. Then it had an area of 1.7 hectares, had a greenhouse with an area of 93 square meters. m and a huge 3-section greenhouse, the area of which was 473 square meters. m and a height of 4 meters. Tropical and subtropical plants were grown in the greenhouse and greenhouse, medicinal, shrubby, woody plants were grown in the open field.
At the same time, the famous Russian botanist Krylov P. N. arrived in the city, bringing with him 60 species of plants, mostly flowers, laying the foundations of the Tomsk botanical collection. Several specimens have survived to this day, which are already 135 years old, among them: rooting ficus, Forster's palm and Bidwill's araucaria.
In 1935, the territory of the garden was expanded to 67 hectares, and in 1935 -up to 90 ha. In 1945, the Botanical Garden (Tomsk) received the status of a separate scientific institution. Several laboratories have been opened.
In 2004, this complex was given the status of a specially protected natural area of regional significance.
