The history of the Stavropol airport has been going on for eight decades. Back in 1934, in the current capital of the North Caucasian Federal District - in the city of Pyatigorsk - a civil aviation detachment was created, which was engaged in the transportation of mail, passengers and cargo. At the same time, this unit, which consisted of pilots, was transferred to the city of Voroshilovsk (now Stavropol).
Historical digression
The airfield was located east of the city's railway station. In the pre-war years, aerial chemical works were regularly carried out at the above transport infrastructure facility, mail letters and parcels were sent within the country, and passengers were transported.
In 1954, Stavropol Airport received new aircraft models for those times - aircraft L-60, Yak-12, AN-2. Six years later, the Stavropol-Moscow air route appeared.
In 1963, a new terminal building was built, which was located near the village of Shpakovskoye (now Mikhailovsk). Stavropol Airport is located there to this day. With timethe need to transport people and goods by air has increased significantly. By 1985, the Stavropol airport had air links with 26 cities in the country.
Seven years later, a regional joint-stock airline was created. However, by the end of the 20th century, the Stavropol airport again became state property.
In 2010, by order of the head of the Russian state, the State Unitary Enterprise Stavropol International Airport was established.
