Civilizations are fading into the past, cities are being destroyed, buildings are being destroyed, but the memory of centuries lives on with old names. It seems that time itself has no power over them. Many centuries have passed since the time when Sokolniki Bor, a reserved grove for grand ducal pleasures, approached Moscow from the North-East. Many generations of princes, and later kings, loved to arrange falconry. Falconers began to settle here, training birds for royal hunting. Under Peter the Great, Sokolnicheskaya Sloboda arose. Since 1742, the Sokolniki district has been part of the customs border of Moscow.
Historical background
The expansion of Moscow required the protection of its borders, the fixing of new borders. By the decision of the Senate in 1742, a new Kamer-Kollezhsky shaft began to be built around the city. An earth embankment with a ditch 37.3 km long and 18 outposts covered 70.9 sq. km. Since 1800, the official border of Moscow has been laid along the rampart. The military-strategic significance of the new fortifications was quickly lost and the project was not implemented. By the middle of the 19th century, it was decided to get rid of the shaft. The outposts were liquidated, the rampart was hidden. The name of the area has been preserved. Part of the Kamer-Kollezhsky fortification became the Sokolnichesky rampart. On the site of the grove, Sokolniki Park is equipped.
On the border of the end of the 20th century, it was decided to restore the historical borders of Moscow and 18 previously existing outposts.
Modern Street
Modern Sokolniki Val starts from the Riga flyover and runs towards Sokolniki Park. Passes along the border of the residential area and the park.
Ends at Sokolnicheskaya Zastava Square at the main entrance. Unfortunately, there are no historically significant architectural monuments left in the vicinity of the street. Notable buildings include:
- Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Sokolniki. The laying of the building took place in 1908, and by 1913 the church was consecrated. This is one of the few buildings that has never been closed. He was lucky to survive the severe communist persecution. It was here that the local council of 1945 elected Patriarch Alexy I.
- The 1956 Sokolniki Sports Palace was reconstructed for the 1980 Olympics to host a handball tournament. After oblivion in the 90s, today the complex has received a second youth. Tennis courts and handball fields are currently operating. You can hold competitions in mini-football. There is a hockey rink, a town for general physical training, gyms and choreographic halls.
- Dwelling house No. 24 with a commemorative plaque about the residence of the writer Vyacheslav Shugaev.
Moscow is glorified by many significant events. Sokolnichesky Val was no exception.
Sokolnicheskaya Grove
From the hunting grounds during the reign of Peter I, the grove more and more began to acquire the features of a park. The young king liked to walk here. For its convenience, a clearing was laid, which has survived to the present and is called the May Clearing. During the war with the French, local residents took refuge here. For a quick exit to Losiny Ostrov, another clearing was laid. By 1840, the grove began to acquire the features of a landscaped park. Its modern layout has developed, when the alleys radiate from the central square. Skillful gardeners have tried to create a beautiful landscape park. Today, four cascades of ponds with a total area of more than 10 hectares have been recreated in the park, and there are a number of sports and recreation facilities. Bicycles and various sports equipment are rented, active recreation areas are equipped, and the Museum of Modern Calligraphy is open. Sokolnichesky Val runs along the border of the park from the north. In the east - Bogorodskoe highway, in the south - Rusakovskaya embankment, and from the west - the ring railway.
