Spartakovskaya Square: bread and circuses

The capital of Russia is famous for its many old squares, streets and embankments, because it is one of the oldest cities in Russia. Spartakovskaya Square is a district of the Third Ring in Moscow.

• lane of the same name;
• Perevedenovsky lane and the street of the same name;
• the railway line along which the Rusakovskaya overpass passes through the line of the Kazan direction.

Historical background

Until 1919, the square was called Gavrikov Square and belonged to Basmannaya Sloboda. The name was given in honor of one of the capital's homeowners.

The new name - Spartakovskaya Square - was given in honor of the revolutionary organization "Spartak", which began its activities in 1916. In those days, the street was the "core" of Marx's ideology. Later, almost all members of this organization became representatives of the Communist Party in Germany. Today, almost the entire area is occupied by the railway track, the rest is sidewalks.

Some 100 years ago, Spartakovskaya Square was large, pavedcobblestones. The whole street was surrounded by tenement houses and offices. Perevedenovsky forest yard was located here. After the appearance of steam locomotives, train whistles were already heard on the square, and in 1894 an elevator was built (Spartakovsky lane, a modern business center). In fact, the forest yard turns into a bread yard.

Buildings

In addition to the railway tracks and sidewalks, a department of the Moscow Railway, a freight station, enters the square. Also, a drama theater with an interesting name - "Modern" (located in the former building of the Moscow Grain Exchange) and an academic symphony orchestra, the administration of "MMK-Trans", the Wedding Fashion Center and other administrative and municipal institutions.

Drama theater

The main attraction of Spartakovskaya Square is the white-stone mansion. In the old days, the Grain Exchange was located here, and the building itself was erected in 1911. The architect of the building was Capitol Doolin. Some elements on the facade of the walls have remained to this day.

In Soviet times, the building was given over to the House of Pioneers. Immediately after the revolution, the institution was called very pathetically - the House of Communist Education, and already in 1935 it was renamed the Bauman Orphanage of Culture. There were many circles in the institution. Lev Durov and Rolan Bykov studied here. But already in 1982, the Palace of Pioneers moved to a new building.

Five years later, the building is occupied by a theater called the Studio Theater on Spartakovskaya,created by Vragova Svetlana. A little later, in 1994, the theater is already called "Modern". For some time he puts on quite successful productions. However, time requires a new attitude towards theatrical productions, and in 2016 the director changes, who radically reworks the repertoire and gives preference to modern dramaturgy. The name is losing the prefix "b", and so far theater tickets are in great demand.

It is no longer possible to come here in sneakers and with a backpack, this applies even to media representatives. Even the bells in the theater are author's, based on the music of Dashkevich. Now the stage is perfectly visible from any seat in the hall. It is planned to build a transforming stage for events in the former grain warehouse.

Symphony Orchestra

Basmanny district of Moscow, Spartakovskaya Square and the academic symphony orchestra conducted by Kogan P. It would seem that what do they have in common? The first is the address. The second one is located in the building 1/2 and was founded in 1943 - it is practically the oldest in the whole country.

The orchestra's first conductor was Lev Steinberg, but he died in 1945. Then there were several more well-known heads of the team. In 1989, Pavel Kogan became chief conductor, who practically breathed new life into the orchestra.

Subway station

Spartakovskaya Square in Moscow is closest to Baumanskaya metro station. It is located between Elektrozavodskaya and Kurskaya, and belongs to the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line. The station was launched in 1944, and received the name in honor of the Bolshevik Bauman N. E. Although inthe project had two more name options:

• Spartakovskaya;
• Walk around.

And they wanted to decorate the station itself in the ancient Greek style, with antique sculptures. It can be said that the project was practically implemented, but instead of ancient figures and gladiators, statues of contemporaries were erected.

How to get there by car
