History of the territory
In ancient times, there was a cascade of ponds along the Sinichka River or, as it is also called, Nadprudnaya, in these places. In the sixteenth century, the Holy Cross Monastery was transferred here, and a little later a temple was built in honor of John the Warrior.
After a century and a half, Count V. S. S altykov decided to build a manor on this territory. The building was supposed to be surrounded by a large park area. After the completion of construction work, Catherine II decided to buy this country house from its owner and place low-income officers in it for permanent residence.
Then, in 1808, this estate was reconstructed into the building of the Institute of Noble Maidens, and the surrounding, by that time, already extensive square, was called Ekaterininskygarden.”
In the twentieth century, the territory of the park zone was significantly reduced, the river was enclosed in a pipe, and only the Small and Big ponds remained.
