In Russia, many people believe that St. Petersburg is the original cultural city in the country. It is famous for its huge architectural heritage. For example, the St. Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex (SCC), one of the greatest indoor buildings in Europe, is located near Victory Park.
History
The sports complex is over forty years old. The idea of erection arose in the distant 60s. However, construction began only in 1970 and lasted about ten years. The grand opening of the St. Petersburg sports and concert complex took place in 1980. This happened in those days when St. Petersburg was Leningrad, and the sports facility was called the V. I. Lenin.
This building can be considered a copy of the Moscow "Olympic", which was also being built by the time of the 1980 Summer Olympics. It is impressive that in Soviet times the St. Petersburg Sports and Concert Complex was especiallylarge-scale and prestigious by world standards. It was then that the building was used according to its vocation - to provide all interested athletes with the opportunity to train and perform on the sports ground. But variety performances were still held here from time to time.
About 1200 sports competitions took place in the closed mega-scale building. No fewer gala concerts (1000) and fairs (300) were organized over the entire period.
