The Tsimlyansk Sea, as the locals proudly call the reservoir, was artificially created in 1952, during the construction of a hydroelectric power station. Even before it was filled with water, there were many disputes due to the fact that historical monuments fell into the flood zone, such as the Sarkel fortress, which belonged to the Khazars in ancient times, and several Cossack villages and farms that were historically associated with Pugachev and Razin.

In addition to historians, biologists were also worried, and, apparently, not in vain: after the creation of the reservoir, the hydrological background of the Sea of Azov deteriorated sharply.

On the territory occupied by the Tsimlyansk reservoir, there are well-known reserves and reserves, the largest of which are Rostovsky and Tsimlyansky. The employees of these reserves are actively engaged in environmental and scientific activities. Large-scale work is being carried out to protect the soil, the state of rare flora and fauna is being studied. It is safe to say that the Tsimlyansk reservoir is not onlya powerful symbol of human capabilities, but also an example of a rash and hasty decision that has negative consequences for nature.
