The Caucasus Mountains are surrounded by legends and stories about their origin. One of them says that in ancient times, when in their place there was only a blue sky, a steppe and several small mountains, an old man appeared on top of one of them, who led the life of a hermit, eating only berries and spring water. Soon the Lord noticed him, which greatly angered the devil. He began to tempt and torment the old man. The hermit endured for a long time, but then he prayed to God with a request to allow him to punish the devil. Having received permission, the old man heated the tongs and grabbed the nose of the offender with them. The devil literally howled in pain, hammering his tail on the ground. An earthquake began, as a result of which the Caucasus Mountains were formed. And where the blows of the tail destroyed the rocks, today there are gloomy gorges.

This very beautiful legend was written down by none other than the great Alexandre Dumas, who traveled around the Caucasus in the fifties of the 19th century.
